    items

  • arranging big events where important messages are
given to public by celebrities / popular people
  • internet discussions about the events, which
    involve new people
  • informal communication during events
  • getting different stakeholders to meet together

8
Top 10 communication issues related to
conservation and biodiversity over the next 5
years
  • Sheshory festival
  • Environment and mass media e-mail discussion
    groups
  • discussing hot issues on-line
  • arranging press clubs at hot places of Ukraine
  • involving students of journalism into our
    activities
  • creating documentaries on Carpathian traditions

    sustainable development

Carpathian convention with local commitment to
    implementation

    stakeholders

9
Examples of good practice What has and has not
worked well?
  • International world music and land art festival
    Sheshory
  • popular world-music bands and local ethnic
    musicians to give messages
  • Announcements from the stage by musicians (for
example, about needs to collect garbage in the
festival place and in the national natural park
placed around the village, to clean mountain
river etc., and people really do this)
  • famous artists (land art) and art school students
work together creating land art compositions for
communicate the beautiful of nature and the
    importance of preservation

10
  • attracting journalists is an opportunity to raise
key questions e.g about cultural traditions of
local people and possible ways for them to
survive without cutting trees in the park.
  • Getting journalists from the whole country to hot
places is always good resulting in a lot of
stories about the same problem and raising
    awareness.
  • Stakeholders round table discussion raises many
questions but fails to maintain an ongoing
relationship for the long-term. People from the
village, from small towns, from governments, NGOs
    etc tend to exist separately.

11
Measuring the success of our communication
campaigns
  • One of the biggest problems in the festival
village Sheshory is domestic garbage, which comes
from local people and from tourists. After the
festivals third year there is now a village
owned big car for garbage, several special boxes
and local people try to keep the place clean.
  • We will soon measure the shift in local people
moving to sustainable tourism or handcraft
businesses instead of cutting trees in the forest
(it is the most profitable business now).

12
Challenges and opportunities in the delivery of
the conservation agenda
  • Challenges
  • lack of communication between authority agencies
  • the environmental movement does not see its
    connection with cultural events
  • local people do not realise dependence of their
today life from the state of nature
  • Opportunities
  • mass media to aid in raising awareness
  • interesting events and stories will help us to
bring ideas of sustainable development to people
