Michelangelo Buonarroti(1475-1564)was an

after he was born, the family moved to Florence

to work for the artist Domenico Ghirlandaio. In
Ghirlandaios workshop,he learned the technique

Classical sculpture.

Rome by Pope Julius 11 to begin work on a huge
free-standing tomb with forty figures.
- In 1508,Pope Julius 11 interrupted
Michelan-gelos work on the tomb because he
wanted him to paint the Sistine Chapel in the
Vatican. - Single-handedly,working for over four years
from scaffolding,Michelangelo painted the whole
ceiling with over three hundred figures.

11Style Characteristic
All Paintings and sculptures of Michelangelo
were heroic , monumental , muscled , and filled
with a pent-up expressive emotionalism.
Especially his sculpture , such as his well-known
Pietas , David , and figures for the tomb of
Julius 11 showed his individual bent of freeing
images imprisoned in the stone.
