Title: Resources

1
  • Resources constraints
  • Session 15
  • Global Youth Network Workshop Needs Assessment
    Programme Planning

2
What are resources constraints?
  • Very simply, resource is something you can use to
help you achieve your aim. But in order for
anything to be a resource you must first have a
good idea about the methods you are going to use.
  • Likewise a constraint is something that prevents
you from achieving your aim through the means you
    have chosen.

3
What resources do we need?
  • Of course, this will depend largely on the kind
of tasks you set yourself, but broadly speaking
you may look at three categories
  • Material resources
  • Human resources
  • Financial resources

4
Material resources
  • This includes things, for example books,
costumes, awareness material, a place to meet,
    food for volunteers, etc.
  • In many ways material resources are the easiest
to come by but only if you have a good
relationship with the community you are working
    in.

5
Material resources
  • You can try and secure material resources from
  • Within the community
  • Local businesses
  • Families

6
Human resources
  • This is probably the most valuable resource you
have because it is the most flexible and because
this is the one resource that you can develop
    yourself
  • Human resources include all the volunteer, paid
staff, if any and community collaborators

7
Human resources
  • Volunteering is unpaid conscious, free will
activity for the benefit of others
  • You will find various kinds of volunteers in
almost every community but volunteerism does not
grow of its own accord, it must be encouraged.
  • Ochman and Jordan (1997), Volunteers A
Valuable Resource, Institute for Policy Studies,
    John Hopkins University

8
Human resources
  • One way to encourage participation is involving
the community and target group in the whole
process of planning and implementing an
    intervention
  • Of course, other methods like recruitment drives,
making presentations to schools and other
    captive audiences are also available

9
Human resources
  • Things to keep in mind when working with
    volunteers
  • Be sure to have a definite job in mind before you
    start looking for volunteers
  • Describe the job well and in such a way that it
emphasizes the benefits that the volunteer will
also get by working with you

10
Human resources
  • Make sure you match the interests of the
volunteer as far as possible to the kind of work
he or she does with you
  • Prepare an adequate training/ orientation
    schedule for the volunteer
  • Programme managers must have regular feedback
    sessions with the volunteer
  • Reward volunteers for good work done

11
Financial resources
  • Some issues to keep in mind
  • You are not out to find money, you are out to
find people who will give you money
  • Money is usually given to an individual, not an
organisation one person gives money to another
    person

12
Funding pyramid
13
Some methods of fundraising
  • Small fundraising events like bake sales, garage
    sales, book sales, etc.
  • Small but ongoing fundraising activity like
    running a lending library, etc.
  • One off fundraising activity like a phone
    campaign
  • Making presentations to donors
