Strength and weaknesses
  • Strengths
  • Involves the community
  • Starts from a young age
  • Character education can be a good management
    program.
  • People share the same core beliefs which makes
    less discipline problems
  • Weaknesses
  • Everyone doesnt always agree
  • Difficult to get older kids involved in a new
    program
  • However, people doubt whether scripted programs
    are effective.
  • See first bullet
  • May be a taxing program to learn
  • ..one more thing

Case Study Characters
  • Carol Goodman is thirteen, strong willed,
arrogant, influential but in a negative manner.
    She is popular and self-centered.
  • Mrs. Gizzard has been teaching for twenty years
and has yet to see a student quite like Carol.
While consulting with a guidance counselor, she
    discovered Carols questionable history of
    emotional abuse towards other students.
  • Mary Blaine is a overweight girl with a dreadful
    case of acne.

10
Case Study The instigating problem
  • Carol has been humiliating Mary in front of
friends and classmates. As a result, there was a
major confrontation between the two girls. In a
class discussion, Mary gave her opinion to Carol
and Carol ostracized Mary. Mary went into
hysterics and cried to Mrs. Gizzard.

11
Case Study What happened next?
  • Mrs. Gizzard consulted the Guidance Counselor
about the situation with Mary and Carol. Mrs.
Gizzard found out that Carol had a history of
bullying. When found out about their
conversation she threatened Mrs. Gizzard, telling
her to, mind her own business. And that she
could get Mrs. Gizzard in trouble. Now, Mrs.
Gizzard doesnt know what to do.

12
What would happen if Positive Action was already
in placeStrengths.
  • Daily lessons from parents, school, and the
community would be helpful in stressing social
    skills and self-management to Carol.
  • Carol would be able to carefully examine her
actions including how she gets upset, why, when,
    and what makes her upset.

13
What would happen if Positive Action was already
in placeWeaknesses
  • Carol may not care about Positive Action and
neither do her parents because they are all sick
of Positive Action. They feel it is not genuine
    and scripted.
  • Carol, even though has a history, may have
transferred and doesnt know about Positive
    Action.

14
Class discussion
  • How would you apply Positive Action?
