What steps do I need to take to study abroad?
  • 1. Advising Check with your major or college
advisor and the study abroad advisor at your
    school.
  • 2. Research your area of interest Read, read,
read. Take classes in your area of interest. Talk
to language instructors and faculty you know who
specialize in your area of interest.
  • 3. Research your program options Does DePaul's
Foreign Study Program have a option that fits
your interests? Are there independent study
options that you might consider pursuing within
your major department? If you cannot find a
DePaul program suited to your needs, consult the
publications from the Institute for International
Education, Academic Year Abroad and Vacation
    Study Abroad.

the study abroad advisor if you are unclear as to

Do I have to be away for the whole year?
  • Its up to you. Depending on where and when you
study abroad, you can stay for a one or two
quarters, or even the whole year.

8
Is it a requirement to know another language?
  • It depends on the destination and length of time
you study abroad. If you study abroad for short
term which occurs in December, there is no
language requirement. If you study abroad for
long term there is a language requirement for
Italy, France, Spain, Germany, and Japan. Others
dont have language requirements, but some
require you to take language classes while
studying abroad. This includes the countries of
    Hungary, and Mexico.

9
How do I know if Im eligible to study abroad?
  • Requirements vary from program to program.
    Applicants should generally have sophomore,
junior, or senior status. Students are expected
to be in good academic standing with above
average grades, usually a GPA of 2.5 or higher on
a 4.0 scale. Many programs require that you have
taken one-two quarters of the target language.
An interview process is also required to be
    completed before admittance.

10
What about costs? Can I afford it?
  • The Study Abroad Program is designed to be within
the financial reach of most DePaul students.
Total costs are comparable to what might be spent
taking regular courses at DePaul and living in a
university hall or apartment. Students pay
regular DePaul tuition for each study abroad
program plus an additional program fee to cover
    round-trip transportation, housing, course
    instruction, excursions, administrative costs,
and, in some cases books. The program fee ranges
    depending on destination.
  • The Financial Aid Office at DePaul offers study
abroad travel grants to qualified students. In
addition, a host of scholarship and grant
    opportunities through outside funding agencies
    and organizations are available.
