2Why Broadband (BB) is important in Asia?
1. Significance of Broadband (in general)
(1) High-speed, always-on and flat rates

2. Significance of Broadband in Asian context
(1) Huge population, potential for growth
BB has significant impact. (2) BB brings closer
relationships among economies (3) BB helps
preserve Asia's diversified culture etc.
growth in information flow, making Asia
an information hub in the world
It is vital to diffuse encourage the use of BB
in Asia.
3Asia Broadband Program (March 28, 2003)
The "Asia Broadband Program" is an action program
initiated by the Japanese government to promote
deployment and use of broadband in Asia.
- e-Japan Strategy ? (July 2003) stipulates
that Asia Broadband Program shall be steadily
promoted. - Asia Broadband Program is made up
of A. Targets (by 2010) B. Measures to
be taken 1)Measures to build BB network
infrastructure 2)Measures to diffuse BB.
4ABPs Targets (by 2010)
- 1. Ensure broadband access for all people in
Asia - (including access from various public
facilities). - 2. (a) Build intl networks with sufficient
bandwidth - (b) Balance volumes of information flows.
- (Asia-North America Asia-Europe
North America-Europe) - 3. Facilitate transition to IPv6-ready networks.
- 4. Prepare environment for secure and easy use of
ICT - 5. Digitize and archive Asian cultural assets.
- 6. Develop machine translation technologies for
Asian languages. - 7. Increase number of ICT engineers and
researchers.
