1
Sermon On The Mount
  • Lesson 11 Judging, Prayer and Treatment of
    Others
  • Mt. 71-12

2
Introduction
  • General Principle We are not to have a
    fault-finding spirit.
  • Jesus condemns hypercritical, harsh, hasty,
    unfounded, censorious, uncharitable, malicious,
    slanderous, bitter and ill-natured judgments.
  • A successful teacher or preacher must first
instruct and admonish themselves (Ga. 61).
  • We must practice what we preach and teach (Ro.
    221-24).
  • General Principle We must earnestly ask, seek
and knock with the proper disposition of mind.
  • Answered prayers are based on praying from a pure
    heart.
  • Gods answers to prayers is yes, no, wait.
  • General Principle We must practice the golden
rule which is to do unto others as you would
want them to do unto you.
  • Recognized teachers and leaders (I.e. Scorates,
Buddha, Confucius and Hillel stated Do not do
to others what you would not have done to you.
This makes a rule of not doing rather than doing.
    It is negative and passive.
  • Follow Jesus, the standard and example of
    righteousness.

3
Laws Concerning Judgment
  • Judge not that you be not judged. (Mt. 71)
  • Types of judgments excluded
  • Judgment by civil courts Remind them to be
subject to rulers and authorities, to obey, to be
ready for every good work. (Tit. 31)
  • Judgment of the church on those who walk
disorderly Do you not judge those who are
inside? But those who are outside God judges.
Therefore put away from yourselves that wicked
    person. (I Co. 512-13)
  • Private judgment as to wrong-doers note those
who cause divisions and offenses, contrary to the
doctrine which you learned, and avoid them.
    (Ro. 1617)
  • Regarding weak and strong Receive one who is
weak in the faith (Ro. 141)
  • We must judge whether someone is a false teacher,
    erring member, disorderly, weak, strong,
    spiritual, fleshly, etc.
  • Jesus is addressing a fault-finding attitude. He
is addressing harsh, unfounded, censorious, etc.,
    judgment.

4
Key Conclusions
  • We must judge ourselves before we judge others.
  • And why do you look at the speck in your
brothers eye, but do not consider the plank in
your own eye? Or how can you say to your
brother, Let me remove the speck out of you
eye and look , a plank is in your own eye?
Hypocrite! First remove the plank from your own
eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the
speck out of your brothers eye. (Mt. 73-5)
  • A speck is a mote or chip of wood dust.
  • A plank is a heavy house timber.
  • Brethren, if a man is overtaken in any trespass,
you who are spiritual restore such a one in a
spirit of gentleness, considering yourself lest
    you be tempted. (Ga. 61)
  • There is no difference in self-appointed judges
    and correcting hypocritical teachers.
  • We will reap what we sow For with what
judgment you judge, you will be judged and with
the same measure you use, it will be measured
    back to you. (Mt. 72)

5
Lessons To Learn
  • Proper judgment must be based on truth.
  • The way of love demands truth Lovedoes not
behave rudely, does not seek its own, is not
provoked, thinks no evil, does not rejoice in
iniquity, but rejoices in truth bears all thins
believes all things (I Co. 134-7)
  • We must judge according to the righteousness
standard of God Do not judge according to
appearance, but judge with righteous judgment.
    (Jh. 724)
  • Two wrongs do not make it right.
  • We must have evidence and factual information to
    make sound judgments.
  • We must have a fact-finding spirit!

6
Lessons To Learn
  • A fault-finding spirit will fail to recognize
accountability to God for judging motives of
    others, stereotyping, bias, prejudice, and
    condemning others.
  • have you not shown partiality among yourselves,
and become judges with evil thoughtsbut if you
show partiality, you commit sin, and are
convicted by the law as transgressors. (Jm.
    21-9)
  • Do not speak evil of one another, brethren. He
who speaks evil of a brother and judges his
brother, speaks evil of the law and judges the
law, you are not a doer of the law, but a judge.
There is one Lawgiver, who is able to save and to
destroy, Who are you to judge another? (Jm.
    411-12)
  • We are not permitted to be partial, show
    preferential treatment of members versus
visitors, have racial hatred and speech, etc.
  • We will not be effective at converting others, no
matter how zealous, if we have a fault-finding
spirit. - For you travel land and sea to win
one proselyte, and when he is won, you make him
twice the son of hell as yourselves. (Mt.
    2315)
  • You are the man! is what Nathan said to David
    (II Sm. 127).
  • We must practice what we preach and teach!

7
What Does Mt. 76 Mean?
  • Do not give what is holy to the dogs nor cast
your pearls before swine, lest they trample them
under their feet, and turn and tear you in
    pieces. (Mt. 76)
  • Dogs and swine are unclean animals. They are
    wild and liable to attack.
  • We are not to treat dogs and swine as priests and
    kings.
  • There is a limitation to the law of judging (I.e.
    dogs, swine, etc.)
  • Thoughts
  • Saloons are not for prayer, ministers are not to
    marry adulterers, etc.
  • We are not to profane holy things.
  • Avoid fruitless offering of the gospel.
  • We should turn a deaf ear to a person who crys
poverty and destitution, yet spends money on
    unrighteous indulgences.

8
Lessons To Learn
  • We should not bestow favors on those who are not
    worthy.
  • Why will God send a delusion to those who refuse
to believe the truth? because they did not
receive the love of the truth that they might be
    saved. (II Th. 210-11)
  • Paul turned away from the Jews to the Gentiles on
several occasions. but since you reject it,
and judge yourselves unworthy of everlasting
life, behold we turn to the Gentiles. (Ac.
    1346)
  • We are not to condone false teaching If
anyone comes to you and does not bring this
doctrine, do not receive him into your house nor
greet him for he who greets him shares in his
    evil deeds. (II Jh. 9-11)
  • The Pharisee types who are undiscerning, lawless,
    hypocrites, proud, self-righteous, bound to
unlawful traditions, etc., are likened to the
dogs and swine. And in vain they worship Me,
teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.
    (Mt. 152-3, 9)
  • But when some were hardened and did not believe,
but spoke evil of the Way before the multitude,
he departed from them and withdrew the disciples,
reasoning daily in the school of Tyrannus. (Ac.
    199)

9
Conditions Of Prayer
  • We must ask and it will be given unto you
    (Mt. 77)
  • Ask according to His will if we ask anything
according to His will, He hears us. (I Jh. 514)
  • We must forgive others For if you forgive men
their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also
    forgive you (Mt. 614-15)
  • Seek first But seek first the kingdom of God
and His righteousnessseek, and you will find
    (Mt. 633 77)
  • Not with doubt But let a man ask in faith,
with no doubting, for he who doubts is like a
wave of the sea driven and tossed by the wind.
    (Jm. 16-7)
  • Dont ask amiss You ask and do not receive,
because you ask amiss, that you may spend it on
    your pleasures. (Jm. 43)
  • Not committing willful sin Now we know that
God does not hear sinners but if anyone is a
worshipper of God and does His will, He hears
    him. (Jh. 931)

10
Lessons To Learn
  • Ask for the things we need, seek with diligence
and knock with persistence and earnestly desire
    to enter.
  • Blessed are those who hunger and thirst after
    righteousness. (Mt. 56)
  • We must be diligent in our work. I must work
the works of Him who sent Me while it is day the
night is coming when no one can work. (Jh. 94)
  • We can not pray to God and expect an answer if we
are living like the devil. - A praying knee and
a dancing foot dont grow on the same leg.
  • Gods parental care is better than earthly
parental care For who the Lord loves He
    chastens (Hb. 125-6)
  • Dont misunderstand Gods answers. He does not
deceive or injure us. - If you then, being evil,
know how to give good gifts to your children, how
much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy
Spirit to those who ask. (Lk. 1113)
  • If we seek the truth and righteousness, then we
    will find it!
  • In truth, I perceive that God shows no
    partiality (Ac. 1034-35)

11
God Answers Prayer
  • Gods possible answers are Yes, No, or Wait.
  • Examples
  • David anointed king wait
  • Jobs asked for relief from suffering wait
  • Jesus in the Garden ask for the cup to pass no
  • Elijah asks for no rain yes
  • Abrahams ask for the son of promise wait
  • God will answer our prayers.
  • For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks
finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened.
    (Mt. 78)

12
The Golden Rule
  • Therefore, whatever you want men to do to you,
do also to them, for this is the Law and the
    Prophets. (Mt. 712)
  • The Golden Rule is founded upon loving God and
others On these two commandments hang all the
Law and the Prophets. (Mt. 2240)
  • The Golden Rule is a basic principle of
    morality and most orderly societies.
  • Examples of Jesus Woman at the well, healings,
    miracles, feeding the 4,000/5,000, etc.
  • Our prayer life and daily actions must be in
    harmony!

13
Applying The Golden Rule
  • See It, Own It, Solve It, Do It, like the Good
    Samaritan (Lk. 10).
  • Based on a compassionate and forgiving spirit
Blessed are the merciful (Mt. 57)
  • Acting upon the Golden Rule will prevent us
neglecting strangers, those in prison, hungering,
    thirsting, poor, etc. Mt. 2531-46
  • Remember the poor (Ga. 210)
  • Restoring others Brethren, if a man is
overtaken in any trespass, you who are spiritual
restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness,
considering yourself lest you be tempted. (Ga.
    61)
  • Not causing others to sin Therefore let us not
judge one another anymore, but rather resolve
this, not to put a stumbling block or a cause to
fall in our brothers way. (Ro. 1413)
  • Teaching and saving others have compassion,
making a distinction but others save with fear,
pulling them out of the fire, hating even the
garment defiled by the flesh.(Ju. 22-23)

14
Lessons To Learn
