- Scientists know that when working in the
laboratory, it is very important to follow safety
procedures. The most important safety rule is to
always follow your teachers directions or the
directions in your textbook exactly. - Make sure you have read each rule and direction
carefully, making sure you understand each rule.
If you do not understand a rule, ask your teacher
to explain it.

- When ever there is glassware out on the lab bench
show extra caution and care when moving about the
laboratory area. - When glass breaks never pick it up with your
hands

8Liquids
- When ever heating liquids or working with
dangerous acids make sure to use the safety
goggles - Never point the open end of a test-tube toward
another person

- When smelling a substance for scent or change in
scent never stick your nose in the container. The
correct procedure is to wave your hand over the
top of the container and smell the fumes from the
side.

14The fire extinguisher is located on the back sink.
- Only the science facilitator is authorized to use
the fire extinguisher.
A. Combustible wood, clothes, paper, plastic,
and rubber. B. Flammable liquids oil, grease and
paint thinner. C. Energized electrical equipment.

- The average fire extinguisher only operates about
10 seconds. Don't waste it! - You must get close to the fire - as close as 5 or
6 feet! - To effectively operate an extinguisher, think
P-A-S-S. - P -- pull the pinA -- aim the hose at the base

NO HORSEPLAYING IS ALLOWED.
- Always read and make sure understand the activity
or investigation you are going to do. Whenever
you see the word caution, follow the directions
carefully. - Learn where safety equipment is located in your
classroom . Make sure understand how and when it
is to be used. - Do not work in the lab when you are unsupervised.
Do not perform investigations without your
teachers permission. Never mix, touch, taste,
heat or breathe chemicals unless you are told to
do so by your teacher. - Always wear safety goggles and an apron when
working with chemicals. - Do not use cracked or broken glassware. Report
this to your teacher. - Keep all work surfaces and equipment clean.
- Do not eat or drink in the classroom, unless told
otherwise by your teacher. - When you finish your work in the lab make sure
that your work surface is clean. Return all
materials to their proper places. - Be sure to wash your hands with soap and water
after working in the lab. - Report all accidents to your teacher.
