3Kens Accident
- In November 1990 Ken Woodward was working at a
major soft drink companys bottling plant in Kent - He was asked by his manager to do a task that he
was not trained to do - Ken didnt use the appropriate PPE
- When the chemicals were mixed, a chemical
reaction occurred, which led to an explosion - Kens face, nasal passage and mouth were badly
burned - He lost his eyesight, smell and taste because of
it
4Workplace Accidents
- 2.2 million people are suffering from an illness
they believed was caused or made worse by their
current or past work. - 646,000 of these were new cases in the last 12
months - Last year 241 workers were killed at work, a rate
of 0.8 per 100,000 workers - 6 million days were lost overall (1.5 days per
worker)

- Damage to tools/equipment
- Spoiled Work
- Absence cover costs
- Counseling may need to be provided (victim, other
workers) - Management time spent on admin/investigation etc
- Production shutdown time
- Failure to meet orders/deadlines
- Legal/compensation fees
- Good safety is good business!
