Title: Create the Graph

1
Create the Graph!
  • Functional Relationships between two variables

2
Walk the Graph!
The graph below shows the distance in meters
between you and a wall over a 10 second time
period.   The horizontal axis represents the
time and the vertical axis represents the
distance.   Write a description of what the graph
depicts
3
Using the CBR
  • Link the CBR 2 motion detector directly into the
TI-84 Plus. You can use either the I/O
Unit-to-Unit cable or the mini-USB cable.
  •
  • Set the sensitivity switch to Normal mode.
  •
  • Turn on your graphing calculator.
  •
  • The Easy-Data App will launch automatically if
the mini-USB cable is used. If you are using the
I/O unit-to-unit cable, you will need to press
the ? key, scroll down to highlight the EasyData
App and press ? to launch the App.

Using the CBR Review
  • Setting up the calculator for data collection
  • Select Setup (press ?) to open the Setup menu.
  • Press 2 to select 2 Time Graph to open the Time
    Graph Settings screen.
  • Select Edit (press ?) to open the Sample Interval
    dialog window.

5
Using the CBR Review
  • Enter 0.1 to set the time between samples to 1/10
    second.
  • Select Next (press ?) to advance to the Number of
    Samples dialog window.
  • Enter 50 to set the number of samples to collect.
  • Select Next (press ?) to display a summary of the
    new settings.
  • Select OK (press ?) to return to the main screen.

6
Instructions
  • One member of the group will need to hold the
calculator while the other member holds the CBR
2 unit. The third member of the group will be
walking in a straight line toward to team member
holding the CBR 2 unit. You can walk forwards
    and backwards towards the unit.
  •
  • You may produce better graphs if the person
walking holds a book in front of them as they
walk. This helps to smooth out the motion on the
    calculator.
  •

7
Instructions
  • Select Start (press ?) in the main screen to
start collecting data at the same time you tell
    the team member to go.
  •
  • Let each team member take turns walking, holding
the calculator, and controlling the CBR 2 unit.
  •
  • Sketch each group members graph on the empty
    graphs provided.

Using the CBR - Debrief
  • Describe how your graph reflects the way you
    walked when creating the graph.
  • How is your distance from the CBR reflected on
    the graph?
  • Walking away from the CBR
  • Walking toward the CBR
  • Stopping
  • What does the origin represent on your graph?
  • What do the x and y-axes represent?

9
Your description might look like the following
  • Start 1 meter away from the CBR. Walk slowly
away from the CBR for about 3 seconds, stand
still for about 5 seconds, and then walk quickly
toward the CBR for 2 seconds.

10
Debrief
  • What does the graph look like when you walk
    toward the CBR2? Why?
  • What does the graph look like when you walk away
    from the CBR2? Why?
  • What does the graph look like when you stand
    still? Why?
  • Describe the relationship between distance and
    time.
  • What is the association of distance and time with
the horizontal axis and the vertical axis?

11
Mathematical Terms
  • Independent Variable
  • Dependent Variable
  • Origin
  • Slope

12
What letters of the alphabet can you create?
  • For this activity you may choose to use the CBR2
or not. Complete the questions on your activity
    page.
  • NOTE A partner will be needed if you choose to
use the CBR2 for this activity. Record your
    partner on your paper.
