Teaching Music PitchTic and Toc
  • Once upon a time, in a very hilly land lived two
best friends. Their names were Tic (one thumb
up) and Toc (other thumb up).
  • Now one day Tic woke up very early.( Mime
actions.) What time do you think that was? (Have
a child tell you what time she/he thinks is very
early) Now back to our story. Tic had a secret
that he just had to tell Toc right away so he got
up and got dressed very quietly because he is not
want anyone to know he was awake. First he put
on ______? (Have children choose articles of
clothing and mime the entire dressing process.)
Then he put on _______? Next came his ________?

Teaching Music PitchTic and Toc
  • Finally he was ready so he crept downstairs very
quietly and opened the front door.
  • He started off to Tocs house so he went up the
hill and down the hill and up the hill and down
the hill and up the hill and down the hill and up
the hill and down the hill all the way to his
house. (Throughout the story, on up the hill
and down the hill move your Tic or Toc thumb up
and down with the words and escalate your voice
up and down as well. Have the children join in.
This allows them to hear and practice making
pitches that go up and down.)

Teaching Music PitchTic and Toc
  • When he reached his house he knocked at the door
fairly quietly but no one answered. Then he
knocked a little bit louder but still no one came
to the door so he decided to go home. Once again
he went up the hill and down the hill and up the
hill and down the hill and up the hill and down
the hill and up the hill and down the hill all
the way back home. Then he very quietly opened
the door and climbed the stairs to his room.
Since everyone was still sleeping he decided to
go back to bed so he took off his clothes and
hopped in. (Once again you mime all the actions
    for this part.)

21
Teaching Music PitchTic and Toc
  • Now the same day Toc work up early but not as
early as Tic. What time do you think that was?
(Have a child tell you what time she/he thinks it
is.) He had a secret that he just had to tell Tic
right away so he got up and got dressed very
quietly because he is not want anyone to know he
was awake. First he put on ______? (Have

  • the hill and up and down the hill and up the hill
and down the hill all the way to his house. (Add
appropriate pitch actions.) When he reached Tocs
house he knocked at the door fairly quietly but
no one answered. Then he knocked a little bit
louder but still no one came to the door so he
decided to go home. Once again he went up the
hill and down the hill and up the hill and down
the hill and up the hill and down the hill and up
the hill and down the hill all the way back home.
Then he very quietly opened the door and found
his Dad in the kitchen making breakfast. This
made him very happy because he was hungry after
climbing up and down all those hills.

23
Teaching Music PitchTic and Toc
  • Now what do you think is happening at Tics
house? You are right. He is also eating his
breakfast. After breakfast both boys set off to
tell each other their secrets so they both went
up the hill and down the hill and up the hill and
down the hill and thats where they met right
in the middle valley between their two houses.
First Tic told Toc his secret and then Toc told
Tic his secret. (What were their secrets? Can
anyone tell me?) Then both boys went up the hill
and down the hill and up the hill and down the
hill until they both got back home safe and
    sound.
