Textbook Information
  • .
  • Ms. G. is in charge of the textbooks. She will
give you the textbooks you need for your classes.
You are responsible for the textbooks you are
given. If you lose them or damage them, you need
to pay for them. Books are expensive, so be
careful with them. Do not write in them, do not
remove the barcode, and dont get them wet- water
damages books. You will get a bill for lost or
damaged books. You must pay for a lost book to
    get a replacement book.

4
The Circulation Desk
  • This is where you check out textbooks or library
books, buy pencils, pens, or disks for the
    computer. Ask general questions here!

5
Library Rules
  • The library is a NO food or drink area. Leave
your food and drinks on top of the file cabinet
by the circulation desk. Do not take food into
the computer lab. You will get detention if you
eat or drink in the library as food and drinks
dont go well with books or computers. Gum is
also not to be chewed in the library as it always
seems to find its way into the carpet.

6
Checking out library books
  • First you will need to have your ID card to check
out books and/or use the computer. The library
has over 25,000 books to choose from. You can
check out up to 5 books or magazines at one time.
Books are checked out for 3 weeks, magazines for
1 week, and reference books for 1 week. All items
can be renewed 2 more times. Dont return items
late! When you decide on a book you want, check
it out at the circulation desk.

7
Overdue Books
  • If a book is overdue, there is a fine. The fine
is 10 cents a day. The maximum fine for a book is
1.50. If you have more than one book out and you
return them late, your fines can add up quickly.
  • You will not be able to check out more library
books until you return overdue books and pay the
    fines you owe.

8
Using the Computers
  • All students need to have their user name and
password to use the computer. Put your ID card on
top of the tower. Do not change the desk top or
download music links to the computer. The
    programs available to you are
  • Microsoft word 2002- for word processing
  • Microsoft power point- for class presentations
  • Internet explorer- for internet access and email

9
Printing Documents

  • 1. Make sure you have saved any work.
  • 2. Left click on START menu.
  • 3. Highlight PROGRAMS.
  • 4. Highlight LIBRARY.

  • 6. Return to document left click FILE and PRINT.
DO NOT hit the print button more than 1 time. It
is 10 cents a page to print - pay at the front
desk. If you have problems, ask for help.

10
Other Library information
  • The library staff is here to help you Show
Respect. Dont break the rules! Be responsible.
Pay for printing, ask for help if you need it,
and if you do something wrong, get help.
Remember, this is your library. Dont mess it up.

11
Library Research
  • Whats better to use for research, a book or a
computer? Well, it all depends on what youre
looking for, how much information you need, and
how much time you have to do the assignment. It
is also important to pay attention to what the
teacher is saying or telling you to do. If you
have an assignment sheet, follow the directions
    provided there.

12
Librarians hints For Research
  • I generally suggest you begin all research with
the encyclopedia. I find the World Book
Encyclopedia easiest to use. Use the most current
publication date of an encyclopedia to get the
best information. World Book is also online
either through the Library link off the Jefferson
    web site or at www.worldbookonline.com.

13
If You Use Books For Research
  • Start at the online catalog. The online catalog
can be found on the 2 computers in front of the
librarians office. Type in the subject that you
are looking for and then click on the subject
icon or the keyword search icon. When you get
the list of library books on your topic, make
sure you write down the Dewey call s and titles
of the books you found. Now go to the bookshelves
and find the books. Look them over and then
decide which ones are best for your report.

14
If You Use The Computer
  • Obviously the resources of the internet are
incredible and wonderful, but you can waste a lot
of time and not find what you want or need. Dont
despair, just think logically. Remember, the idea
is to get the needed information as quickly as
possible that will help you meet the requirements
of your report or project. Dont work harder than
    you have to.

15
How I Do Computer Research
  • There are a number of search engines to use.
Search engines organize sites and help you find
what you need or want. I usually use
www.google.com. This is a web site that is useful
for educational resources, and when I use it, I
find what I need about 90 to 95 of the time. 2
other search engines that are good are
    www.ask.com and www.altavista.com These are
    helpful as well.

16
Dont Forget To Use The Useful Places Off Of The
Jeff Library Link
  • Go to the Jefferson High School site
    www.juhsd.k12.ca.us/jhs/index/html. Click on the
library link. Then click on the online resources
that are on the right hand side of the screen 10
items down. Here you will find numerous web sites
to assist you in research including the link to
    the World Book Encyclopedia online.

17
Other Library Resources
  • Go to the Jefferson website and click on the
links to other libraries. Here you will find the
    Peninsula Library site (www.plsinfo.org). The
Peninsula Library System, including Daly City
Public Library, has an amazing amount of
resources and help tools available for you to
use. You need to have a Library Card to take full
    advantage of these resources.
