Executive Summary
  • Climate Change
  • Who is Cleaner Climate?
  • Carbon trading
  • Carbon offsetting
  • Tourism responses
  • Carbon Calculators
  • Cleaner Climates projects
  • Initiatives for your business/industry
  • Next steps/Questions

About Climate Change
  • Consistent increase in earths temperature
  • Current emissions approx 25 BN tonnes of Green
    House Gases (GHGs) pa.
  • Each report appears to worsen outlook
  • Carbon trading is preferred market based
mechanism to drive down global emissions
  • Tourism industry under close scrutiny, primarily
because the movement of tourists appears to be a
    big carbon-emitting industry

Who is Cleaner Climate?
  • EXPERIENCE Specialist provider to travel
industry developing programs and processes to
    measure and reduce corporate environmental
    footprints.
  • SKILLS Our technical team is able to analyse
emissions following the most rigorous and
    detailed methodologies available.
  • EXECUTION Cleaner Climate is able to provide an
entire end to end solution incorporating
  • Project management of Greening strategies and
    initiatives
  • New product and services development
  • Delivery of highest quality offsets from our
    Kyoto compliant project pool
  • Identification and commercialisation of Carbon
    opportunities

5
How does trading work?
  • Voluntary
  • Individuals/Companies choose to offset
    emissions
  • Compliance readiness
  • Differentiate/marketing
  • Attract staff
  • Meet green consumer
  • Compliance
  • Largest emitters are given allowance or purchase
an allocation to produce emissions. (CAP)
  • Penalty rate for exceeding
  • Internal reductions
  • If exceed beyond CAP need to buy, (vice versa)

Carbon Trading
  • Expected volume of 4.2 billion tonnes transacted
    in 2008
  • Up 56 from 2007
  • Market worth US92 billion
  • Australian expected Carbon price of AUD40/tonne
    roughly equal to ETS

Carbon Offsets
  • How does offsetting work?
  • Carbon offsets can be created by funding projects
around the world that either avoid or absorb
emissions. They are produced by renewable energy,
increased energy efficiency or elimination of
industrial gases under set standards and schemes.
  • What to look for?
  • Audited Independent third party validation and
    measurement
  • Sustainable Deliver social and environmental
    benefits
  • Additional Would not happen under business as
    usual scenario
  • Permanent Permanent reduction in GHGs

8
Tourism Industry responses
  • Bus and tour companies Embedding carbon offsets
    into retail prices
  • Travel agencies retail and corporate Offering
    tailored reporting and offsetting solutions
  • Hotels Marriott protecting 1.4M acres of
    Brazilian rainforest, and Hilton saving
    EUR9M/2yrs through EE
  • Airlines Likely to have EU emissions cap post
    2012
  • Cruise ships Implementing sustainable tourism
    policies and practices

Carbon Calculators
  • Measuring carbon intensity footprint of tourism
requires the use of models, which can link
economic activity to fuel use and GHG from supply
of products and services to tourists (directly
    and indirectly).
  • There are several variables and uncertainties
involved in calculating the climate impacts of
    individual travel components. One important
factor is the impact of air emissions released at
    high altitude (RFI).
  • Use scientifically based assumptions.

Our projects
Cleaner Climate only develops and supports
projects with independently certified and
measured emission reductions. Our projects adhere
to the standards, processes and requirements of
the Kyoto Protocols Clean Development Mechanism
and The Voluntary Carbon Standard.

India 2,532 Tonnes C02e/yr (2 x 0.6 MW
turbines) Voluntary Carbon Standard, Kyoto CDM -

What can you do?
  • Determine a Carbon Strategy
  • Measure carbon footprint
  • Create new products and services
  • Implement reduction strategies and processes
  • Engage your staff and customers in the process
  • Encourage and reward the right behaviours
    (discounts etc.)
  • Market honestly and transparently (ACCC)
  • Consistently report on progress
  • Dont wait for regulations!
