NYS Math Science Teaching Incentive Program
  • A maximum of 500 new recipients will be chosen
    each year
  • Annual award for not more than 4 years of
    full-time undergraduate study and 1 year of
    full-time graduate study
  • Annual award will equal the cost of tuition at
    SUNY (presently 4,350)

NYS Math Science Teaching Incentive Program
  • Recipients that fail to comply with the terms of
    the contract will have the value of their awards
    converted to a student loan
  • Payments are made after the successful completion
    of each academic year (not each semester)

Part-Time TAP
  • The Education Law is amended by adding a new
    section 667-c to create the Part-Time Tuition
    Assistance Program for students attending the
    State University of New York (SUNY), the City
    University of New York (CUNY), and the
    independent degree granting colleges

  • Modeled after the CUNY Part-Time TAP Pilot
    Program
  • First awards made in the 2007-08 academic year

Part-Time TAP
  • Partial TAP payment for taking 6 to 11 credits
  • Students must earn two consecutive semesters of
    12 credits each (total of 24 credits) and
    maintain a C average prior to being eligible
  • 2006-07 freshman class will be the first cohort

Reporting Credits Earned
  • A new provision requires HESC to prepare an
    annual report on the Tuition Assistance Program
    to be submitted each February 15th
  • The number of credits earned by students
    receiving TAP is required in the report
  • HESC will determine how best to collect this data

Accelerated Study
  • Students shall qualify for accelerated study only
    upon the completion of 24 credits, or its
    equivalent, in the two semesters prior to
    application
  • Implemented for terms beginning after Jan. 1,
    2007

Change to Satisfactory Academic Progress Chart
  • Uniform charts have been created for first-time
    undergraduate students in 2006-07 (sample charts
    in commissioners guidelines)

Ability to Benefit
  • Students first receiving aid in 2006-07, who
    do not have a certificate of graduation from a
    recognized school within the United States
    providing secondary education (a high-school
    diploma or recognized equivalent), must attain a
    passing score on a federally approved ability to
    benefit (ATB) test that has been independently
    administered and evaluated as defined by the
    Commissioner of the State Education Department
    to receive New York State funded grants or
    scholarships including Tuition Assistance Program
    (TAP) awards
