What is Honor?

• Respect? Is it more than Respect?
• - Honor is defined as an act of worshiping a
  superior being or someone with high respect.
• Who do we honor Today?

HONORING GOD

• Zealously honoring God
• Numbers 25 10-13 - 10 The LORD said to Moses,
  11 Phinehas son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron,
  the priest, has turned my anger away from the
  Israelites for he was as zealous as I am for my
  honor among them, so that I in my zeal I did not
  put an end to them. 12 Therefore tell him I am
  making my covenant of peace with him. 13 He and
  his descendents will have a covenant of a lasting
  priesthood, because he was zealous for the honor
  of his God and made atonement for the
  Israelites. (NIV)

GOD WILL HONOR ME

• God has made it clear that if we follow his
  commands he will bless us.
• 1 Samuel 230 30 Therefore the LORD, the God
  of Israel, declares I promised that your house
  and your fathers house would minister before me
  forever. But now the LORD declares Far be it
  from me! Those who honor me I will honor, but
  those who despise me will be disdained.
• Proverbs 3 9-10 9 Honor the LORD with your
  wealth, with the firstfruits of all your crops
  then your barns will brim over with new wine.
• In Malachi 310 God said, Bring the whole tithe
  into the storehouse, that there may be food in my
  house, Test Me in This, says the Lord Almighty
  and see if I will not throw open the floodgates
  of heaven and pour out so much blessing that you
  will not have enough room for it.

HONORING GOD WITH OUR BODIES

• Our bodies are a Temple given to us from God. We
  should treat them that way.
• 1 Corinthians 618-20 18Flee from sexual
  immorality. All other sins a man commits outside
  his body, but he who sins sexually sins against
  his own body. 19 Do you not know that your body
  is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you,
  whom you have received from God? You are not
  your own 20 you were brought at a price.
  Therefore honor God with your body.
• We become united in one with Christ when we are
  baptized.

HONORING GOD THROUGH BAPTISM

• What we must do to be baptized.
• How are we to honor God once we have been
  baptized.
• 1 Corinthians 11 23-32 23 For I received from
  the LORD what I also passed on to you The LORD
  Jesus on the night he was betrayed took bread, 24
  and when he had given thanks he broke it and
  said, This is my body, which is for you do this
  in remembrance of me. 25 In the same way, after
  supper he took the cup, saying, This cup is the
  new covenant in my blood, do this, whenever you
  drink it, in remembrance of me. 26 For whenever
  you eat this bread and drink this cup, you
  proclaim the LORDs death until he comes. 27
  Therefore, whoever eats the bread and drinks the
  cup of the LORD in an unworthy manner will be
  guilty of sinning against the body and blood of
  the LORD. 28 A man ought to examine himself
  before he eats of the bread and drinks of the
  cup. 29 For anyone who eats and drinks without
  recognizing the body of the LORD eats and drinks
  judgment on himself. 30 That is why many among
  you are weak and sick, and a number of you have
  fallen asleep. 31 But if we judged ourselves, we
  would not come under judgment. 32 When we are
  judged by the LORD, we are being disciplined so
  that we will not be condemned with the world.

THE PERFECT EXAMPLE OF HONORING GOD

JESUS

• Nobody has or ever will honor God like Jesus has
• John 1223-28 23 Jesus replied, The hour has
  come for the Son of Man to be glorified. 24 I
  will tell you the truth, unless a kernel of wheat
  falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a
  single seed. But if it dies, it produces many
  seeds. 25 The man who loves his life will lose
  it, while the man who hates his life in this
  world will keep it for eternal life. 26 Whoever
  serves me must follow me and where I am, my
  servant also will be. My Father will honor the
  one who serves me.
• 27 Now my heart is troubled, and what shall I
  say? Father, save me from this hour? No, it was
  for this very reason I came to this hour,
  28Father, glorify your name!

JESUS

• Matthew 26 39-42 39 Going a little further,
  he fell with his face to the ground and prayed.
  My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be
  taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you
  will.
• 40 Then he returned to his disciples and found
  them sleeping. Could you men not keep watch
  with me for one hour? he asked Peter. 41 Watch
  and pray so that you will not fall into
  temptation. The spirit is willing, but the body
  is weak.
• 42 He went away a second time and prayed, My
  Father, if it not possible for this cup to be
  taken away unless I drink it, may your will be
  done.
• Jesus chose Gods Honor over his own.

CONSEQUENCES OF DISHONOR

• Severe Consequences for Dishonoring and
  Disobeying God.
• Adam and Eve
• Moses
• Numbers 20 8-12 8 Take your staff, and you
  and your brother Aaron gather the assembly
  together. Speak to the rock before their eyes
  and it will pour out it water. You will bring
  the water out of the rock for the community so
  they and their livestock can drink.
• 9 So Moses took the staff from the LORDs
  presence, just as he commanded him. 10 He and
  Aaron gathered the assembly together in front of
  the rock and Moses said to them, Listen you
  rebels, must we bring you water out of this
  rock? 11 Then Moses raised his arm and struck
  the rock twice with his staff. Water gushed out,
  and the community and their livestock drank.
• 12 But the LORD said to Moses and Aaron,
  Because you did not trust in me enough to honor
  me as holy in the sight of the Israelites, you
  will not bring this community into the land I
  gave them.

GODS JUDGMENT

• Malachi 316-18 state Gods intentions
• 16 Then those who feared the LORD talked to
  each other, and the LORD listened and heard. A
  scroll of remembrance was written in his presence
  concerning those who feared the LORD and honored
  his name.
• 17 They will be mine, says the LORD Almighty,
  in the day when I make up my treasured
  possession. I will spare them, just as in
  compassion a man spares his son who serves him.
• 18 And you will again see the distinction
  between the righteous and the wicked, between
  those who serve God and those who do not.

JOYS OF HONORING GOD

• If we obey and honor his commandments, God will
  give us what is promised.
• Honor God and he will Honor you too.
• ETERNITY IN HEAVEN WITH HIM!!!
