Discovering Parts of a Seed

Step 1- Discovery

• This experiment is used in a first grade
  classroom.
• It is about finding the different parts of a
  seed.

• The parts of a seed
• Seed coat
• Seed food
• Leaves and root

Step 2- Beginning

• The first step in the seed/bean experiment is to
  soak the bean over night in a glass of water.
• This step allows for easy peeling of the outer
  shell the following day.

Step 3 More Discovery

• The following day, take the soaked seeds/beans
  out the containers.
• The bean/seed should be swollen.
• Begin now to peel away the outer layer, or the
  SEED COAT.

Step 4

• In the next step, students will find the part of
  the seed/bean called the SEED FOOD.
• This is part of the bean is peanut shaped, two
  parts.

Step 5

• In the SEED FOOD part of the bean students will
  find leaves and a root for the bean.
• Students should use a small magnifying glass for
  a better look.
• Students always find it interesting that they can
  actually SEE the root and the leaves in such a
  tiny seed!
