Femtocell
  • A femtocell is a small cellular base station that
a customer can purchase to connect to his/her
broadband Internet service in a home or office to
gain improved cell phone service indoors in areas
where a cellular carrier's macro network coverage
is inadequate. It is a device similar in
appearance to a wireless internet router.

11
What is SYNC?
  • SYNC is an entertainment and communications
system available in Ford, Lincoln, and Mercury
    vehicles
  • It is voice activated
  • It is compatible with Bluetooth enabled devices
including cell phones and media players

12
What can SYNC do?
  • Hands free calling
  • Audible texting
  • Voice activated music from a media player
  • Provide traffic information and directions
  • 911 Assist

13
What is 911 Assist?
  • 911 Assist was created with support from NENA and
    APCO
  • 911 Assist will call 911 directly in the event of
a vehicle crash that caused airbag deployment
  • This is achieved via a Bluetooth paired connected
    phone

14
How does 911 Assist Work?
  • There is a vehicle crash with airbag deployment
  • SYNC will announce to the vehicle occupants that
it is calling 911 unless they press the cancel
    (phone) button in their vehicle

15
How does 911 Assist Work?
  • If the call is not cancelled within 10 seconds
the system will then call 911
  • The PSAP responsible for the vehicles
transmitted location will receive the call from
SYNC in the same manner as any other standard
    wireless call

16
Receiving a 911 Assist Call
  • Upon receiving a 911 Assist call the call taker
    will hear the following message
  • Attention a crash has occurred in a (Ford,
Lincoln, or Mercury) vehicle. Press 0 at any
time to speak with vehicle occupants.

17
Receiving a 911 Assist Call
  • If GPS data is available you might also hear this
    announcement
  • Attention a crash has occurred in a (Ford,
Lincoln, or Mercury) vehicle. Press 1 at any
time for location information. Press 0 at any
time to speak with the vehicle occupants.
  • If you press 1 you will receive a recording that
will provide the X and Y coordinates of the
    vehicle
  • You may still press 0 at any time to speak with
    occupants

18
If the Vehicle Occupants Turn Off the Vehicle and
Open the Door
  • You will no longer be able to use touch tone
    commands
  • Additionally the call will be transferred to the
    connected cell phone
  • You will need to remind your caller to take their
phone with them when exiting the vehicle

19
Things to be Aware of
  • You might receive a 911 Assist call in the middle
    of the announcement
  • SYNC operates using the vehicles sound system,
therefore you will be able to hear anything going
on from anywhere within or close to the vehicle
  • SYNC operates with the connected cell phone,
therefore it is possible for a 911 call to be
placed without there being a vehicle crash

    contained in the registration
  • If the caller moves and does not change the data
    on file with
  • their relay service, calls will route based on
    the old data
  • The ALI screen is not fully developed but it
    should contain
  • gt Callers registered location and callback
    number
  • gt VRS provider company name
