of schedule to keep the company afloat

10
PotterPharms PLC
  • The PotterPharms board will give a contract to
only one division to produce the blockbuster drug
  • Each division must bid for the contract
  • The division must have a high quality, high
impact campaign and a product with good margins
  • Staff in the successful division will be rewarded
  • Staff in other divisions face an uncertain future

11
PotterPharms PLC
  • The employees of each division are hired from the
local pool of students at Keele
  • Employees are assigned to divisions based upon
    their discipline and personality type

PotterPharms PLC
  • PotterPharms task is carried out in teams
  • Each team contains 4 or 5 members
  • Students are allocated to a team based upon the
    results of a Belbin-style questionnaire
  • Each team operates as an autonomous unit and is
    responsible for arranging meetings, etc
  • Groups are given advice on successful teamwork

14
PotterPharms PLC
  • Get to know all members of your team
  • Fix meeting times in advance and stick to them
  • Have team rules!

    formative feedback at each stage

  • Student effort is totally self/peer assessed
  • Student effort mark is used to moderate
    individual student marks

17
PotterPharms PLC Where Did It All Go Wrong?
I thought it was a valuable experience to work on
an exercise as part of a team
18
PotterPharms PLC Where Did It All Go Wrong?
I prefer this style of team-based exercise to
traditional scripted problems
19
PotterPharms PLC Where Did It All Go Wrong?
I learned a lot by taking part in this exercise
20
PotterPharms PLC Where Did It All Go Wrong?
I learned a lot about each aspect.because I had
an input to every task
21
PotterPharms PLC Where Did It All Go Wrong?
More time was needed to complete each activity
22
PotterPharms PLC Where Did It All Go Wrong?
Feedback should be given at every stage of the
exercise
23
PotterPharms PLC Where Did It All Go Wrong?
More feedback was needed at each stage
24
PotterPharms PLC Where Did It All Go Wrong?
More supporting material for this exercise should
be incorporated in the module
25
PotterPharms PLC Where Did It All Go Wrong?
Teams shouldinclude a mixture of students from
CHE-10002 and CHE-10026
26
PotterPharms PLC Where Did It All Go Wrong?
I would recommend that similar exercises be
introduced into other modules
27
PotterPharms PLC Staff Unrest
In general, the exercise was a success. I was
put in a group of people who I wouldn't usually
work with, so it was good to work with people who
I didn't know
More help with the project would have been
useful because its something I haven't done
before so more help on what was needed to be done
would have been appreciated
The whole project seemed rather vague - nobody
seemed to know what they were doing at any point
of the exercise! More explanation and feedback
needed
In theory this is an excellent way to learn and
practice teamwork. The possibilities for learning
how to use the different software on computers
today is endless as well. However, if you're
rubbish at computers and not a team player, this
is not a pleasurable task .....I ultimately
enjoyed it though...
28
PotterPharms PLC The Rise of the Machines
  • Resources available previously on LTR server
  • WebCT had potential to streamline the company
  • Divisions had access to their individual
    resources
  • Discussion groups enabled virtual meetings
  • Deadlines were set for individual assignments
  • The Chair could provide input at every stage
  • Technology enabled employees to produce work for
feedback faster than expected by The Chair
  • Employees working smarter but with low morale

29
PotterPharms PLC Call In The Receivers
  • Logistical and practical problems that existed
prior to 2006-2007 were ignored for one last push
  • The Chair chose to expand the company mission and
    diversify further into module PHA-10010
  • WebCT encouraged a 24/7 culture in employees that
was not anticipated by The Chair
  • Feedback could not be given quickly enough
  • The Chair has now taken a position elsewhere
  • CHE-10002, -10026 under new management

30
PotterPharms PLC The Re-launch
  • Diversification to include PHA-10010 spread the
company resources too thinly to cope well
  • The Chair lost sight of the company ethos/the
    plot
  • PHA-10010 is now the focus for consolidation
  • Employees have diverse backgrounds, wide-ranging
skill sets and experience of teamwork
  • The number of employees will certainly increase
  • PotterPharms Regeneration
