3AE Transportation Sector
Since 1991
- Infrastructure and Logistics
- Develop and implement infrastructure to support
the adoption and acceptance of electrified
transportation. - Enable the creation of electrified regions that
include infrastructure and corresponding
vehicles. - Testing, Validation and Demonstration
- Accelerate the market penetration of electrified
transportation through performance verifications,
demonstrations, and infrastructure development. - Outreach and Facilitation
- Work with stakeholders to positively impact
acceptance and integration of electrified
transportation. - Inform policymakers of the social, environmental
and economic benefits of electrified
transportation. - Influence vehicle purchase decisions to support
electrified transportation.

5Background Electrified Transportation
- What is Electrified Transportation
- Vehicles
- Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEV)
- Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEV)
- Electric Vehicles (EV)
- Infrastructure
- Charging Stations
- Electrical Load Management
- Technical Support
- Incentives, Policies and Drivers

6Background Why electric?
- Electricity is better than Oil
- Economics Electricity cost per mile is about a
quarter of gasoline cost per mile - Cleaner CARB estimates that a PHEV with 20 mile
EV range emits about half the GHG of a comparable
gasoline car - Security nearly 2/3 of US transportation oil is
imported 3 of power generation in the US comes
from oil.

7Background When are they coming?
- Electrified vehicles are here and more are coming
- Hundreds of thousands of vehicles are on the road
today - Conversions, retrofits and kit vehicles are
already available - Within the next several years nearly a dozen
manufactures will offer plug-ins and electric
vehicles over 18 have given intent to produce - Tens of thousands of plug-ins and electric
vehicles available in 2010-2012 from automakers
such as Ford, GM, Toyota, Nissan, Mitsubishi
NCGetReady_at_AdvancedEnergy.org
8Background Understanding the Issues
- Automobile manufacturers face an uncertain market
in the best of economic times - Consumers are skittish of committing to
technologies they perceive as unproven - Vehicle availability is not synonymous with
adoption. - Limited infrastructure to support electrified
transportation - Cost will initially be higher than conventional
vehicles, which may hinder prospective buyers or
raise concerns for dealerships (batteries are
expensive) - Range anxiety - availability of convenient
fueling

9RMI - Project Get Ready
- Project Get Ready (PGR)
- Officially launched by the Rocky Mountain
Institute (RMI) on February 24, 2009 - Help community stakeholders work together to Get
Ready - to prepare for and adopt electrified
transportation - Provide a national forum for pioneering
communities lessons learned, best practices,
and overall progress - Three (3) cities selected as the pioneers
Raleigh, Indianapolis and Portland - Triangle area added shortly thereafter
- NC Get Ready!
NCGetReady_at_AdvancedEnergy.org
10What is NC Get Ready!
- NC Get Ready! is a new initiative being piloted
in the Triangle area, supported by a consortium
of cities, government officials, industry leaders
and not-for-profit organizations. - Vision To create positive social, environmental
and economic benefits for North Carolina by
accelerating the transition to electrified
transportation.
NCGetReady_at_AdvancedEnergy.org
11NC Get Ready Key Objectives
- Educate stakeholders on the viability of plug-ins
electric vehicles and to overcome
misconceptions or concerns that hinder adoption
of new technologies. - Establish sound infrastructure to deliver a
network of charging stations that meet the needs
of vehicle owners, without jeopardizing the
stability of the power grid. - Build relationships with car makers and
supporting technologies/services, and assure the
availability of plug-ins electric vehicles in
North Carolina. - Explore opportunities for economic development
among green-minded vendors and manufacturers
seeking a viable and forward-thinking location to
grow their business.
NCGetReady_at_AdvancedEnergy.org
12NC Get Ready Moving Forward
- Facilitate working groups
- Collaborate with car makers and supporting
technologies/services - Identify prime usage corridors
- Site selection is underway for 10 charging
stations - Identify job growth and economic development
opportunities for North Carolina - Develop a roadmap that can be implemented across
NC - Explore funding opportunities to implement and
expand the NC Get Ready! initiative
NCGetReady_at_AdvancedEnergy.org
13NC Get Ready!
- We are one of the first in the nation to make a
true commitment to the widespread adoption of
green transportation technologies bringing
cleaner air, better health, job growth, lower
dependence on foreign oil, and an even greater
sense of pride to our community.
