Oral Presentations
  • During this session we will cover the following
with regard to making oral presentations
  • Preparation
  • Making the presentation
  • Delivery
  • Visual aids
  • The material which you will cover in your
presentations should be well researched, to the
point, also tell an interesting story!
  • Before we go into more detail with regards to
content or using visual aids, remember that your
peers will also be keeping an eye on the
    following

3
Oral Presentations
  • Your voice changes in your tone should indicate
the importance of specific material, your
classmates should be listening carefully for
    this.
  • Body language Your body movements are a key
indicator of what your thoughts attitudes
    really are.
  • Appearance Dress appropriately for your
presentation, as were all know first impressions
can influence peoples opinions of you.

4
Oral Presentations
  • As is the case with any type of presentation
practice is essential!! By practising you will
improve your general presentation skills your
    confidence in delivering your material

5
Oral Presentations
  • Preparation
  • Similar to way that you would structure an essay
or report, preparing for an oral presentation is
no different. Your talk must be prepared
    carefully logically.
  • Therefore, you must be able to answer the basic
    questions of
  • what is the purpose of the presentation?
  • what are the objectives of the presentation?
  • what are the main points you want to make?

6
Oral Presentations
  • You should use these questions as a starting
    point for your talk.
  • It might be of help if you write out roughly what
you are going to say. Just like a written
report, you will now be in a position to review
    re-write if necessary.
  • Make sure that your story runs smoothly in a
consistent manner. Dont jump from your first
point to your fourth, missing out 2 3.

7
Oral Presentations
  • If you are finding it difficult to express a
point easily, because you mightnt understand it
fully, then its probably best to leave it out of
your talk. This way the changes of getting
confusing or caught out are less lightly!
  • Avoid reading from a script or directly from the
overhead projector (if your using one). If you
read from a script then you may find yourself
constantly trying to locate the thing you what to
    say.
  • You should already have a good idea what you are
going to say, through all the practising you have
    been doing!!!

8
Oral Presentations
  • However, its quite acceptable to prepare cue
cards which should have key words or phrases on
them. Cue cards are roughly the size of
postcards. From a practical point of view always
remember to number them in case they fall!!
  • Most importantly you should rehearse your
presentation both to yourself in front of
friends or family. This will make a big
    difference to you!!

9
Oral Presentations
  • Making the presentation
  • Always start of by greeting the audience (Good
morning, ladies gentlemen), and tell them who
    you are.
  • Try and grade the audiences attention straight
    away
  • With regard to the audience the following check
    list might be helpful
  • Who will the audience be
  • How many people will be present
  • Have they any background knowledge of the
    material
  • What type of presentation do they expect

10
Oral Presentations
  • All good presentation follow a similar formula
  • Tell the audience what you will be covering
  • Cover the material
  • Conclude by summarizing what you have told them
  • Example..
  • Keep to the time allowed, its not that damaging
if you are a minute over or under. If you have
overheads or power-point slides then the rule of
thumb is usually a couple of minutes for each

11
Oral Presentations
  • Remember that the chances of the audience getting
bored with a slide increase the longer you have
it up! So try and stick to no more than 5 mins
  • It important to always stick to your original
presentation plan, try and not wander off in a
tangent, the time will go quicker than you think
  • At the end of the presentation always thank the
audience try to end on a high note. Ask if
anyone has any questions or if people are
reluctant to ask then why not ask the audience a
    question.

12
Oral Presentations
  • Dealing with questions
  • Check you have understood the question, dont be
afraid to ask for it to be repeated
  • If you dont know then just say so!
  • Make sure the person has understood your answer
  • Try to anticipate any awkward questions in
    advance
  • Delivery
  • Speak clearly. Dont shout or whisper. Try not
to rush or go deliberately slowly.

13
Oral Presentations
  • Consciously pause at the key point, this should
let the audience know you are trying to emphasise
a key point. Avoid making jokes unless your
    naturally funny
  • As ready noted, your ability to change the speed
pitch of voice can be the difference between an
    interesting average presentation.
  • You can use your hand to emphasise key points but
be aware to indulging in too much hand waving!

14
Oral Presentations
  • Its important that you make eye contact with the
audience, make sure and look at them as much as
possible. Dont just fix your gaze on one
person! You could end up intimidating them.
  • Dont face the display screen the whole time
    just talk to it
  • Remember not to stand in front of the screen and
    obscure someones view!
  • Avoid moving around too much, pacing up down
    might unnerve the group

15
Oral Presentations
  • Visual Aids
  • Visual aids can significantly improve the
interest of a presentation. However, it must be
relevant to what you want to say, a poor design
or use of a slide can simply get in the way of
    your talk.
  • Here are some visual aids
  • Overhead projection transparencies
  • 35mm slides
  • Computer projection (power-point, excess)
  • Video, and film
  • Real objects flip charts/blackboard

16
Oral Presentations
  • Try to keep it as simple as possible, complex
design or equipment may lead to confusion for
both the speaker audience. Make sure that you
know how to use the equipment are comfortable
    with it.
  • If necessary arrange for a trial run though to
check all the equipment is in working order.
Always remember to check your slides for
    typographical errors, consistency of fronts
    layouts!!
  • Try keep wording on slides to a minimum. Too
much wording can mean the audience will spend too
much time reading not actively listening to the
    speaker.

17
Oral Presentations
  • Avoid using yellow orange colours on your
slides, these do not show up well when projected.
Finding literature on the design of slides
shouldnt be a problem. Use your local library
or just check it out on the internet.
  • Take into account the lighting of the room when
doing your presentation. Too much light will
make the screen difficult to see, again, try and
avoid having to keep switching on an off lights.
  • Lastly try and enjoy yourself, it can be a
    confidence building experience!
