Title: REGION DOBRICH OPPORTUNITIES FOR INVESTMENT AND COOPERATION

1
REGION DOBRICH -OPPORTUNITIES FOR INVESTMENT AND
COOPERATION
2
REGION DOBRICH IS LOCATED AT NORTH-EAST PART OF
BULGARIA. THE REGION IS BOUNDED IN THE NORTH BY
THE ROMANIAN BORDER AND IN THE EAST BY THE BLACK
SEA.
3
REGION DOBRICH
If we talk about the beautiful plains of
Bulgaria, it is clear that we concern one of its
symbols- Dobrudja. Region Dobrich is situated at
the most wonderful spot of the country. The
nature has been very generous to the people of
Dobrudja. It has gifted them with the fertility
of the wheat arable fields and the endless tract
of the Black sea. It is a fact that in Dobrudja
is located one of the ancient towns (2600 B.C.)-
Crunoi-Dionisiopolis-Karvuna-Balchik. One of the
first and biggest medieval fortresses of Danube
Bulgaria emerged in Dobrudja, because Khan
Asparouhs cavalry had won this land first and
built on the remains of Dionisopolis its new
fortifications of the young state.

  • The picturesque Dobrudja seashore is well known
all over the world with its natural sand lines,
modern towns, monuments and historical heritage
    of ancient cultures.
  • The tourist resources, which are well preserved
at its natural mode, are one of the priorities of
    the District administration and local
    authorities. The attractive international summer
resorts Albena and Rusala are a desired
destination to more than 120,000 tourists
annually. With the set up of modern
infrastructure network I deeply hope that the
investment interests will be much more at the
fields of tourism, agriculture, industry and
    construction.
  • The skilful utilization of the natural
resources of the region will create conditions
for the production of competitive goods,
especially the nourishing industry. With such
activities side by side with the renovation of
the means of production are preconditions for
involving new partners, associates, creditors and
    investors.
  • The people of Dobrudja are responsible and well
    trained men and women.
  • They are very well aware with the challenges of
    our time and world.
  • I would wish to address my messages to future
    investors and partners.
  • I am convinced that Dobrudja soon or later will
contribute its unique palette to the palette of
Europe and the world. Then the people who had
already invested in Dobrudja would earn from a
partnership, full of ideas, talent and undoubted
    professionalism.

GENERAL OVERVIEW
  • Dobrich region is comprised of eight
    municipalities- Balchik, General Toshevo,
    Dobrich-town, Dobrich-rural, Kavarna, Krushari,
Tervel and Shabla with 215 populated sites
including 6 towns. Distinguishing features are
the presence of municipality without own
administrative center on its territory- Dobrich
rural, and municipality-town - Dobrich with
100000 inhabitants- over 46 of the total
    population of the region.

8
GENERAL OVERVIEW
  • Being in the Danube Basin, the land is generally
fertile thereby giving great opportunities for
    both intensive and extensive agricultural
development and proximity to the Black Sea, a
    traditional holiday destination, provides
potential for Tourism Development. There are
unemployment black spots in the border region
and the promotion of industry and tourism are
seen as key features for the future development
    of the Region.

General economic structure
  • Region Dobrich is characterised by a
well-developed agricultural sector. The share of
agriculture of Dobrich is 2.5 times higher than
the national average. The sectoral structure of
the GVA is as follow agriculture - 26.0,
    industry - 23.2 and services - 50.0. The
employment structure in agriculture is better
than the national structure, and worse in
industry. Dobrich region has an unemployment rate
    of 22.4 in 2002.
  • The employment in the primary sector plays a
special role in Dobrich region and this role will
continue in future. The secondary and tertiary
sectors are not so important although the
opportunities for development of these sectors
    are good.

13
AGRICULTURE
  • The arable land of the Dobrich region accounts
for approx. 15 of Bulgarias total farmland,
while the arable land constitutes circa 96.13 of
the total landmass in the region. The
agricultural land market in Dobrich region is
relatively well developed as compared to the
other Bulgarian regions. The main reason for this
is the high level of specialisation in cereal
production, which allows for intensive use of
agricultural equipment and a higher degree of
    mechanisation. This has created significant
demand for larger plots of land and the
relatively high price in the region.
  • Dobrich region has specialized in egg and meat
    production.

14
AGRICULTURE
  • The geographic location, environmental and
climatic conditions mean that the region is well
suited primary for grain and also for wine, fruit
and vegetable production. The production of
cereals accounts for almost 73 in Dobrich
region. The yield is considerably higher than the
    Bulgarian national average.
  • The availability of local feeds and the large
number of meat and milk processing plants in the
region offer very good opportunities for animal
breeding. This is in contrast to the Bulgarian
national livestock sector which was subject to a
number of negative developments during the 1990s.
The region has maintained its share of cattle and
cows (as well as pigs and poultry), while the
proportion of sheep has reduced in the last ten
years. The cow milk yields are higher than the
Bulgarian national average, although currently at
a lower level than in 1995.

15
AGRICULTURE
  • The agriculture in region Dobrich has a leading
    position in Bulgaria

17
ENTERPRISES
  • The economic performance of the industrial
enterprises in Dobrich region shows relatively
medium figures. The region has the necessary
basis for their development -- existence of
    well-organised urbanised centres- Dobrich,
    Balchik, Kavarna, comparatively well-developed
infrastructure - the main development axes of
Bulgaria was and still is Sofia -- Varna, which
    borders the region.
  • Varna is one of the two main seaports of Bulgaria
    - the third one is Balchik that is located within
    the region.
  • The enterprise density is close to the country
average and the net revenues are 24.5 thousands
BGL per enterprise, a little below the country
average. Although the economic diversity at the
municipal level is higher compared with other
regions, it is not supposed to create social and
other economic problems. The opportunities for
enterprise development in the region are
relatively favourable for all sectors of the
economy and for most of the municipalities in the
    region.

    tourism- carrying and supporting ones.

    are developed in Dobrich region

  • - eco- and rural tourism

22
TOURISM
  • With its geographic features and cultural
heritage Dobrich region has arguably unexploited
tourism potential. The tourism industry has made
an important contribution to employment creation
and economic growth in the region over the past
two decades. This is particularly true in the
east of the region in the Bulgarian district of
Dobrich which have benefited from the impact of a
    flourishing tourism industry attracting both
domestic and foreign tourists. In the tables
bellow a summary of the key 2001 tourism
    statistics is presented.
  • Dobrich region
  • Domestic visitor arrivals (000s) 72.9
  • Foreign visitor arrivals 103.7
  • Total visitor arrivals 176.6
  • Share of national visitor arrivals 9.6
  • Domestic overnight stays 261

    potential beds)

23
TOURISM
  • The North-East Bulgaria has a very important
share of the total tourism infrastructure in
Bulgaria. Most of this infrastructure is
concentrated in Dobrich region, especially in the
municipalities along the Black Sea coastal zone.
Mass tourism is the main type of tourism in the
region and remains the main source of employment
and contributor to economic growth. The main
markets are Russia, Germany, BeNeLux and the
United Kingdom as well as neighbouring countries.
In addition to coastal mass tourism the region
also offers a range of natural and cultural
attractions including spa resorts in Tuzlata.
