What is SIMULATION?

• A modelling technique
• A model program is designed and implemented using
  a simulation language
• This model behaves (approximately) like the real
  system when the model program is run
• The inputs or parameters of the model are
  constructed from observations (usually in the
  form of probability distribution functions)
• The outputs are statistical reports

Why use a Simulation Model?

• Test a new idea
• use the model to design the real system
• see what happens if changes are made on the
  system
• Measure the performance of a system
• Conduct experiments if it is expensive to use the
  real system
