  • Jihad means To strive for moral and religious
    perfection which means living in accordance with
    the five pillars of Islam
  • Jihad refers to the struggle one must go through
    to Strive in the Path of God
  • The Struggle is defined both externally and
    internally
  • External struggle is with nonbelievers or enemies
  • Internal struggle is with their own self and how
    they must reject greed or temptation

Five Pillars of Islam
  • Faith or belief in the Oneness of God and the
    finality of the prophet hood of Muhammad
  • Establishment of the daily prayers
  • Concern for and almsgiving to the needy
  • Self-purification through fasting
  • The pilgrimage to Makkah for those who are able

  • Always meant to be a nobler and more finer action
  • It was more of a way of seeing the internal
    struggle as a complete way of life that should
    pervade and individuals day to day affairs
  • The great importance in the internal struggle
    led to its being known as the Greater Jihad

    attack
  • Islam permits military war to protect them
  • Islam law sets very strict laws for the conduct
    of such war

  • Protecting the freedom of Muslims to practice
    their faith
  • Protecting Muslims against oppression, which
    could include overthrowing a tyrannical ruler
