Title: Suffered Under Pontius Pilate

1
Suffered Under Pontius Pilate
  • Luke 22.66 23.25

2
The council of the eldership
  • The council (lit. Sanhedrin) was made up of
approximately seventy members, some of whom were
priests and Sadducees, while others were
Pharisees (see Acts 231-9). Many, whether
favoring the Sadducees or the Pharisees, were
professional scribes and teachers of the law.
This body represented the highest Jewish
political and religious authority of the time
    (Evans 1990 334).

3
Son of Man Son of God
  • But from now on, the Son of Man will be seated
at the right hand of the mighty God (22.69)
  • Jesus statement may very well mean that the
next time the members of the Sanhedrin see him,
they will see him as their judge (Evans 1990
    335).

Suffered under Pontius Pilate
  • Once Pilate had taken funds from the sacred
treasury known as Korban (cf. Matt. 276) to pay
for the construction of an aqueduct in Jerusalem
    (Ant. 18.3.2 60-62 War 2.9.4 175-77), from
his standpoint a normal thing to do. When he
visited Jerusalem, a crowd of Jews protested this
use of money devoted to the purchase of
    sacrificial animals. Pilate had interspersed
among the crowd soldiers in civilian dress armed
with cudgels. On an agreed signal they began to
beat the rioters. A large number perished, and
the protest was silenced (Ferguson 2003 416).

Herod wanting to see Jesus

Pontius Pilate
  • Now, its not as if Pilate wanted to rescue
Jesus because he thought he was good, noble, holy
or just, but that Pilate wanted to do the
opposite of what the chief priests wanted him to
do because he always wanted to do the opposite of
what the chief priests wanted him to do. That
was his regular and settled modus operandi
    (Wright 1996 546).

7
Why did Jesus die?
  • Roman charge
  • In terms of the Roman authorities the answer to
the question why did Jesus die? is that Pilate
not only put cynical power-games before justice
(that was normal), but also, on this occasion,
put naked self-interest before both (Wright
    1996 547).

8
Why did Jesus die?
  • Jewish charge
  • In terms of the Jewish authorities, then, the
question why did Jesus die? evokes (a) that
Jesus was a false prophet leading Israel astray,
    (b) that he was a serious political liability,
and (c) that, since it seemed to be a choice
between killing him and letting the Temple and
nation be jeopardized, he should be killed
    (Wright 1996 551, 550).

Passover
  • These are the LORDs appointed feasts, the
sacred assemblies you are to proclaim at their
appointed times The LORDs Passover begins at
twilight on the fourteenth day of the first
month. On the fifteenth day of that month the
LORDs Feast of Unleavened Bread begins for
seven days you must eat bread made without yeast.
On the first day hold a sacred assembly and do
no regular work. For seven days present an
offering made to the LORD by fire. And on the
seventh day hold a sacred assembly and do no
    regular work (Lev. 23.4-8).
  • Day of Atonement
