Mikindani Gazette
Two men from Mikindani have discovered a
cheaper way to produce light. Musa Mkibalua
Mohammed Ally Zalali both of Jangwani Street,
Mikindani have invented a new lighting system
that uses torches, wire and batteries. The men
were motivated to invent the new system because
of the recent price increase in kerosene.  News
about the new lighting system has quickly spread
throughout Mikindani and is attracting a lot of
interest among the many people who do not have
electricity in their homes. Their invention is
called Lichimondi, and the name is a pun
referring to the Richmond electricity corruption
scandal that shocked Tanzania recently.
Abdallah. S. Mbilingo, a user of the lighting
system, reports he paid 6,000 shillings to the
men for a two-battery system. From two AA
batteries, Mbilingo reports, he has light for one
month. Mr. Mbilingo also added that he is very
satisfied with the new system because now he
avoids buying kerosene.  Interested customers can

Jangwani street, Mikindani, opposite Sheik Zaidi
Shop, near The Small Market.
BUSS LUCKY ESCAPE  By Ahmadi Maulana   On
the 8th of June, a Dar es salaam bound bus,
carrying 57 passengers careered of the road after
the front wheels and axel became separated from
its undercarriage. Shortly after leaving Mtwara
at 6 A.M, Mwera bus lost both its front wheels on
a long flat stretch of road at Ufukoni. It is
believed that the front wheels and axel came off
when the bus entered a dip in the road at high
speed. Fortunately, nobody was hurt in the
accident because the bus did not over turn.
Instead, it stayed upright, sliding on its
undercarriage for about 500 meters. After
disembarking, all passengers returned to Mtwara
where alternative transportation was arranged.

SCHOOL EXPELS STUDENTS By Omanri Ahmad 13
students were recently expelled from Mikindani
Secondary School. The students were expelled for
various reasons however the majority were
expelled due to poor attendance. On the 27th of
May, 13 students were called, along with their
parents, to a meeting with the School Committee.
During that discussion there was apparently a
level of disagreements between the students
parents and the schools teachers. Another
meeting was set for the 3rd of June and the
outcome of that meeting was that the 13 students
(4-Form Four, 6-Form Three 4-Form Two) would be
expelled. The opinions of two expelled students
were sort by the Gazette. Ms. Najumu Hamisi (16)
of Singino who was expelled because of pregnancy
and for failing her Form 2 Examination stated
that she was not angry or upset about the
schools decision. And, Mr. Alawi Hassan of
Magengeni. However, Mr. Hassan declined to
discuss his case or his feelings. Mr Swalehe
Hitu, the Head Teacher of the school explained
that the decision to expel the students was not a
personal one made by himself but rather, many of
the students had broken the law of Tanzania. For
example, several female students were pregnant
and most of the boys had exceeded the number of
days they were legally allowed to be absent from
school.

RELIGION CLASH By Hassan. A. Mdunguma Students at
Mikindani Secondary School recently had a dispute
with their teachers concerning prayer beads.
According to reports, on Monday the 2nd of June,
Muslim students at the school were instructed by
their teachers not to bring their prayer beads to
school. On hearing this many Muslim students
protested and refused to comply. The Muslim
students argued that many Christian students also
bring their prayer beads to school however the
prohibition was not extended to them. Apparently,
after the Muslim students took up their case with
their teachers the prohibition of taking prayer
beads to school was extended to Christians as
well.
DRUGS FOUND ON FARM A large quantity of used
hypodermic syringes and empty medicine bottles
were discovered in a pit on a farm in Mnaida ward
recently. The discovery was made by farm worker
Mr. Bakari as he was clearing roots. Mr. Bakari
said that he was very shocked when his hoe
uncovered the pit. Mr. Bakari suspects the
medicine (Penicillin) and syringes were stolen
from a local hospital and somebody used to come
to the remote spot on the farm and inject the
drugs for recreational use.
