Background Information
  • Milton Hershey was born on September 3, 1857 in
    Pennsylvania.
  • He was raised in a town known as Derry Church and
    he moved to Nine Points when he was 9 years
    old.
  • He was the son of Victoria Fannie and Henry
    Hershey who were of the German and Swiss
    heritage.
  • Milton had one sister. Her name was Serina
    Hershey. She was born in 1862 and she died in
    1867 at the age of four and a half.

Miltons Education
  • Education was very limited and if there was
  • a school house near by it was only one room
  • Milton only completed the fourth grade due to his
    familys moving from place to place.
  • Milton took jobs as being an apprentice for candy
    makers that were set up by his mother and his
    father.
  • In 1872, Milton was an apprentice to a Lancaster
    confectionery shop owned by Joseph Royer. Here,
    Milton discovered his skills in the candy
    business and his fondness towards it.

Marriage
  • On May 25, 1898 Milton Hershey married Catherine
    Sweeney.
  • Their marriage was held at the St. Patricks
    Cathedral in New York City.
  • In 1908 they moved into their new home that
    overlooked the Hershey factory.

The Lancaster Caramel Company
  • In the 1880s, Milton created
  • the Lancaster Caramel
  • Company and borrowed the
  • money to do this from his
  • friend Harry Lebkicher.
  • The company made him
  • very rich and very fast due to the help of
    Lebkicher, his parents, and his many workers.
  • In 1900, Milton sold the company for 1 million.
    He decided that he wanted to concentrate more on
    the chocolate business.

A New Formula
  • Milton went back home in 1903 to build a new
    factory.
  • He had large supplies of fresh milk, and used his
    advantages to produce his fine milk chocolate.
  • In 1905, the worlds largest chocolate
    manufacturing plant was complete.

Establishments
  • In 1909 Milton and his wife Catherine opened a
    school for orphan boys.
  • Milton has opened another school known at the
    Milton S. Hershey Testamentary Trust. This school
    provided education and nurture to more than 1,100
    needy boys and girls in the grades of
    Kindergarten all the way through 12th grade.

Establishments
  • In 1935 the M. S. Hershey Foundation was created.
    This provided education to local residents and
    supported several places including The Hershey
    Museum, Hershey Gardens, and The Hershey Theatre.
  • In 1963 Milton also created the Milton S. Hershey
    Medical Center that brought education to
    thousands.
  • By 1967, medical degrees were already awarded to
    2,182 doctors.

Death
  • On October 13, 1945 Milton Hershey passed away.
  • He died at 1000am at the Hershey Hospital.
  • His funeral was held at the Hershey Industrial
    School and the ceremony took place in the
    auditorium.
  • He was buried in the
  • Hershey Cemetery.
