1
The Baptism Filling of the Holy Spirit
  • Will you make the Bible the judge of your
experience, or will your experience be the judge
    of the Bible?

2
The Baptism ofthe Holy Spirit
3
  • Here are all the Bible references to the baptism
of the Spirit in the entire Bible
  • Matthew 311, Mark 18 Luke 316 John 133
    Acts 15 Acts 1115,16 1Cor 1213
    Romans 63,4 Galatians 327 Ephesians 45
  • Italicized References are implied references.
They only contain some form of the word baptize,
    but not Spirit.

4
1. The Spirits Baptism is for whom?
  • All references are New Testament only.
  • All references before Pentecost are predictive
  • Matthew 311, Mark 18 Luke 316 John 133
    Acts 15
  • Read Acts 14, 5 and draw conclusions
  • The Baptism of the Spirit first occurred in
Jerusalem, a few days after the Lords ascension.
  • The baptism is a new event for believers of the
    church age! You are special!

5
2. When did the baptism occur?
  • Acts 14,5 gospels
  • Acts 2 Pentecost
  • Acts 1044-1118Gentiles saved and baptized at
    moment of salvation.
  • Coming soon!!
  • Was this it?
  • That was it!(Acts 1115,16)

The initial baptism occurred in Acts 2 on the day
of Pentecost and subsequently when the Gentiles
believed the gospel.
6
3. What is the baptism of the Holy Spirit?
  • 1Cor 1213 is the only doctrinal statement on the
baptism of the Holy Spirit in the Bible.
  • we were all baptized All believers (spiritual
or carnal) are baptized by the Holy Spirit.
  • into one body Baptism immerses (baptizw) each
person into the body of Christ, the church, at
the moment of belief in Christ. (cf. Act 1117)
  • The baptism is not an experience of
sanctification subsequent to salvation. It is a
    positional truth.

Will you make Scripture the judge of your
experience or your experience the judge of
Scripture?
9
The Filling of the Holy Spirit
10
1. For Whom is The Filling of the Holy Spirit?
  • Old and New Testament Saints
  • Bezalel (Exo 313) John the Baptist (Luk 115)
    etc.
  • Day of Pentecost (Acts 24) and forward
  • Saved or Unsaved
  • John the Baptist in his mothers womb (Luk 115)
  • Contrast this to baptism which is only for the
    saved of this age.

11
2. What is The Filling of the Holy Spirit?
  • The root idea of filling is control when
discussing emotions or persons and content when
    discussing things.
  • Satan fills (controls behavior). Acts 53
  • Emotions fill and control behavior. Acts 517,
    18 Jealousy controlled Sadducees.
  • The Holy Spirit fills for the purpose of
controlling behavior. Acts 48 Peter filled to
    speak.
  • If you substitute the word control for fill,
you will have a better grasp of the concept.

12
3. How are we filled or controlled by the Holy
Spirit?
  • Sovereignly Whenever God sovereignly desires
(with or without consent) to control us.
  • Developmentally As a matter of character
development. Steven was full as a matter of
character (Acts 63) and filled on occasion to
    speak (755).
  • Consensually As a consequence of submission to
the Word of God (of which the Spirit is the
    author).
  • Compare Eph 518 and Col 316

13
Summary
  • The baptism of the Holy Spirit is positional not
experiential and occurs one time for every
believer of the church age at the moment of his
    or her salvation.
  • The filling of the Holy Spirit is experiential,
may occur multiple times, and is not limited to
the church age. It is related to enablement for
    service and character development.
