Baptism Part 2The New Testament
  • The Word Baptism
  • The NT Teaching

2
The Word - Baptism
  • Baptism was in use in the 1100s as an English
word. It came from old French.
  • Most Bible translators have not wanted to
translate the word it would harm sales among
    those who practice sprinkling
  • Most chose to use the transliterated form of the
word by giving the Greek word an English spelling
rather than translate the Greek word
  • Thus the Greek word baptisma became the
    English word baptism

3
It is all Greek
  • Two words often heard
  • Baptidzo verb (Mark 1616 be baptized)
  • Baptisma noun (Romans 64 buried in baptism)
  • Thayer - 1) to dip repeatedly, to immerse, to
submerge (of vessels sunk) 2) to cleanse by
dipping or submerging, to wash, to make clean
with water, to wash ones self, bathe 3) to
    overwhelm

4
It is all Greek
  • Torrey - Administered by immersing the whole body
    of the person in water
  • Vines Expository Dictionary of New Testament

"baptism," (c) of the overwhelming afflictions
and judgments to which the Lord voluntarily
    submitted on the cross

5
It is all Greek
  • Thayer (bapto) 1) to dip, dip in, immerse 2)
to dip into dye, to dye, colour
  • King James Dictionary Baptize To immerse to
    dip or dye a thing.

6
It is all Greek
  • For the purpose of the rest of the discussion it
will be noted that the mode of baptism is in the
definition of full water immersion. The Greek
word baptidzo means to immerse, dip, or bury in
    water.
  • The very Greek word itself excludes it from
meaning sprinkling or pouring or any other
    attempt to distort the meaning.

NT Passages
  • Matthew 313-17 - 13Then Jesus came from Galilee
to John at the Jordan to be baptized by him.
14And John tried to prevent Him, saying, I need
to be baptized by You, and are You coming to me?
  • 15But Jesus answered and said to him, Permit it
to be so now, for thus it is fitting for us to
fulfill all righteousness. Then he allowed Him.
  • 16When He had been baptized, Jesus came up
immediately from the water and behold, the
heavens were opened to Him, and He saw the Spirit
of God descending like a dove and alighting upon
Him. 17And suddenly a voice came from heaven,
saying, This is My beloved Son, in whom I am
    well pleased.

8
NT Passages
  • Matthew 2818-20 - 18And Jesus came and spoke to
them, saying, All authority has been given to Me
in heaven and on earth. 19Go therefore and make
disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in
the name of the Father and of the Son and of the
Holy Spirit, 20teaching them to observe all
things that I have commanded you and lo, I am
with you always, even to the end of the age.
    Amen.

9
NT Passages
  • Mark 1615-16 - 15And He said to them, Go into
all the world and preach the gospel to every
creature. 16He who believes and is baptized will
be saved but he who does not believe will be
    condemned.

10
NT Passages
  • John 33-5 -
  • 3Jesus answered and said to him, Most assuredly,
I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot
    see the kingdom of God.
  • 4Nicodemus said to Him, How can a man be born
when he is old? Can he enter a second time into
his mothers womb and be born?
  • 5Jesus answered, Most assuredly, I say to you,
unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he
cannot enter the kingdom of God.

11
NT Passages
  • Acts 238-41 - 38Then Peter said to them,
Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in
the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of
sins and you shall receive the gift of the Holy
Spirit. 39For the promise is to you and to your
children, and to all who are afar off, as many as
the Lord our God will call.
  • 40And with many other words he testified and
exhorted them, saying, Be saved from this
perverse generation. 41Then those who gladly
received his word were baptized and that day
about three thousand souls were added to them.

12
NT Passages
  • Acts 834-39 - 34So the eunuch answered Philip
and said, I ask you, of whom does the prophet
say this, of himself or of some other man?
35Then Philip opened his mouth, and beginning at
this Scripture, preached Jesus to him. 36Now as
they went down the road, they came to some water.
And the eunuch said, See, here is water. What
    hinders me from being baptized?

13
NT Passages
  • Acts 834-39 - 37Then Philip said, If you
believe with all your heart, you may. And he
answered and said, I believe that Jesus Christ
is the Son of God. 38So he commanded the chariot
to stand still. And both Philip and the eunuch
went down into the water, and he baptized him.
39Now when they came up out of the water, the
Spirit of the Lord caught Philip away, so that
the eunuch saw him no more and he went on his
    way rejoicing.

14
NT Passages
  • Acts 2216 - And now why are you waiting? Arise
and be baptized, and wash away your sins, calling
on the name of the Lord.

15
NT Passages
  • Romans 63-5 - 3Or do you not know that as many
of us as were baptized into Christ Jesus were
baptized into His death? 4Therefore we were
buried with Him through baptism into death, that
just as Christ was raised from the dead by the
glory of the Father, even so we also should walk
in newness of life. 5For if we have been united
together in the likeness of His death, certainly
we also shall be in the likeness of His
    resurrection,

16
NT Passages
  • Galatians 326-27 - 26For you are all sons of God
through faith in Christ Jesus. 27For as many of
you as were baptized into Christ have put on
    Christ.
  • Ephesians 44-6 - 4There is one body and one
Spirit, just as you were called in one hope of
your calling 5one Lord, one faith, one baptism
6one God and Father of all, who is above all, and
through all, and in you all.

17
NT Passages
  • Colossians 212 - buried with Him in baptism, in
which you also were raised with Him through faith
in the working of God, who raised Him from the
    dead.
  • Titus 35 - not by works of righteousness which
we have done, but according to His mercy He saved
us, through the washing of regeneration and
    renewing of the Holy Spirit,

18
NT Passages
  • 1 Peter 321 - There is also an antitype which
now saves usbaptism (not the removal of the
filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good
conscience toward God), through the resurrection
    of Jesus Christ,
