Title: What did Jesus say about the coming of the Holy Spirit

1
What did Jesus say about the coming of the Holy
Spirit?
  • I will ask the Father, and He will give you
another Helper, that He may be with you
forever... the Spirit of truth, whom the world
cannot receive, because it does not see Him or
know Him, but you know Him because He abides with
you and will be in you.
  • John 1416-17

2
When did the Holy Spirit come?
  • Behold, I am sending forth the promise of My
Father upon you but you are to stay in the city
until you are clothed with power from on high...
  • Luke 2449
  • ...He commanded them not to leave Jerusalem,
but to wait for what the Father had promised...
you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has
    come upon you.
  • Acts 14, 8 cf. 21-4

The Indwelling of the Holy Spirit
4
The Arrival of the Holy Spirit Initiated the
Church
  • More than just a new religion or a new
gathering, the Holy Spirit is responsible for
creating the Body of Christ, the Universal
    Church.
  • If it had not been for the Holy Spirit coming
into the world, He would not have been able to
transform us into, and seal us as a new nation in
Christ, and live within us to be Gods divine
pledge to the body of Christ for Eternal Life (2
    Cor. 121-22 Eph. 113)

5
The Residence of the Holy Spirit
  • More than just being in us He dwells in us. He
has literally made Himself at home (1 Cor. 619)!
  • All believers are indwelt with the Spirit (Rom.
    89) at the moment of salvation (Jn. 737-39
    Acts 1117 Rom. 55 Gal. 31-5 46)
  • Anyone who does not have the Holy Spirit is not a
    believer (Rom. 89 1 Cor. 212-14)

6
The Residence of the Holy Spirit
  • The delayed indwelling of Samaritans (Acts
    814-17).
  • unique to its time and context. If they had not
been introduced to Peter and John (Jerusalem),
then they would have went on with another brand
    of Christianity/Judaism/outside influence
  • These Samaritans may have been regenerated by the
Spirit, but probably were not indwelt/baptized/ano
inted with the Spirit. They did not receive the
fullness of the Spirit, only what the disciples
    had the day before Pentecost.
  • The delayed indwelling of Johns disciples (Acts
    191-7)
  • Paul suspected something was missing from what
they knew. They only knew as much as John the
Baptist knew, the ministry of preparation for the
Messiah. They were righteous by the OT
requirements of faith in Yahweh, but they didnt
know that Jesus was the Messiah. The Holy Spirit
was imparted to these newly saved believers by
Paul and not automatically upon their belief for
the sake of their identity to the Church.

7
The Residence of the Holy Spirit
  • The Holy Spirit lives in you by grace!
  • Cannot earn, deserve, or pray for the Holy Spirit
  • Can a sinner, who believes the gospel, receive
the Holy Spirit?... or do they need to stop
sinning, receiving the Holy Spirit by obedience
    (Acts 532)?
  • What if the sinner was a homosexual? adulterer?
    thief?
  • Saints indwelled with the Holy Spirit (1 Cor.
    11-10 316-17 619-20), yet ridiculously
sinful! Sinning is not a matter of salvation
(or indwelling) its a matter of sanctification.
  • Christians who sin not yielding to the Spirit

8
Indwelling of the Holy Spirit Permanent?
  • Does the Holy Spirit permanently dwell in you, or
can He leave you if you fall into sin?
  • Why shouldnt you believe that the Holy Spirit
can leave you now, if the Bible shows that He has
    left people before?
  • No New Testament (post-Pentecost) passage affirms
that the Holy Spirit ever left a believer.
  • Forever
  • The security of the believers salvation and the
indwelling of the Holy Spirit are integral parts
    of each other.

9
Summary of the Indwelling of the Holy Spirit
  • The Holy Spirit FORMED the Church
  • The Holy Spirit DWELLS in believers
  • at the moment of salvation
  • forever
  • The Holy Spirit CANNOT be received apart from
    salvation
  • The Holy Spirit CANNOT be prevented from
    indwelling a sinning believers life
  • Our Eternal Life in Christ is SECURE because of
    the Holy Spirit
