obedience - Accept the blame, take the hit for the team
- There are results that matter
- Profit - the development of the individuals and
the team - More than winning
10Lead by example more than words(Rule of St.
Benedict 211-15)
- I preach the Gospel, and use words when
necessary. - St. Francis of Assisi - Give commandments to receptive disciples with
words - point out what is good/holy by example - to the
stubborn and dull - Follow what you say - in the light or dark
- Integrity matters

- Treat athletes and students with consistency
- Show equal love to everyone
- Child of God (do you love your own children
equally?) - Fairness of play time
- Teach all the proper fundamentals
12Change the ranks of others as you see fit, as
JUSTICE demands(Rule of St. Benedict 219)
- Who should play where for the betterment of the
team (a reason for the batting order) - Do not elevate someone just based on
age/bloodline, etc.
13Lead others according to where they are in the
journey(Rule of St. Benedict 223-29)
- 2 Timothy 42
- Use argument with the undisciplined and
restless - Use Appeal (to greater virtue) with the
obedient and docile - Use reproof and rebuke for the negligent and
disdainful - cut out the sins while you can
- You must lead /interact to each according to
where they are - Deal with the whole person, not just the athletic
side - They carry their life onto the court
- A Coachs approach/conduct with a player can be
impactful for life
14More is expected to which more has been
entrusted(Rule of St. Benedict 230, 38)
- The great responsibility of a leader
- yourself others
- In Crisis - your reactions, behaviors, decisions
are intensified - Choose wisely... others will follow your lead

results of the team - Growth is the goal, not perfection
- Celebrate the success - both small large
- Verbally compliment players, parents, other
coaches - Raise players up - doing drills correctly,
helping another, giving extra in performance
16Do not show too great of concern for the
fleeting/temporal things, rather seek first the
kingdom of God (Rule of St. Benedict
233)
- Keep the BIG PICTURE in mind
- The development of the whole person vs.
championships - Are you pointing them to Christ?
- Teach the team concept and success over
individual attention - Reflect on your personal conduct - Am I getting
caught up in the little things of the moment or
guiding them toward the ultimate goal?
17 No EXCUSES - do not plead lack of resources as
an excuse (Rule of St. Benedict 235-36)
- Success is not determined by the amount of
resources you have - Teach all to take responsibility for their
actions - John Woodens 2 sets of 3
- Dont whine, complain, or make excuses
- Dont lie, cheat or steal
18The Leadership Challenge
- Knowing that Leadership is a process by which you
influence others towards a common goal - Are you willing to do what it takes?
