  • Main conclusions of opinion poll 2006
  • In Europe, the majority of citizens want to
promote modes of transport, which are more
respectful of the environment. Many citizens are
worried about the quality of the air they breathe
and put air pollution at the top of their list of
    environmental concerns.
  • Most of them are also in favour of increasing the
amount of greenways and pedestrian areas over
highways in order to rebuild a common sense of
neighbourhood and local community and to solve
    air quality and noise pollution.
  • And they see the EMW as a good tool to tackle
urban mobility challenges and improve the
environmental effects linked to our day to day
    commuting habits.

10
Why should a city organise a Mobility Week?
  • An opportunity to initiate and test a wide range
    of measures
  • Platform for local authorities and organisations
    to
  • Promote existing policies, initiatives and best
practices related to sustainable urban mobility
  • Contribute to raising citizens awareness on the
damages that current urban mobility trends
    generate on the environment
  • Establish performing partnerships with local
    stakeholders
  • Launch new longer term policies and permanent
    measures
  • Test traffic measures and consult with citizens
  • Raise awareness of citizens on growing concerns
such as air quality, road safety or climate change

11
Permanent measures
  • Make the European Mobility Week last a whole year
long !!!! It reminds people of the fact that less
motorised traffic in town is possible and shows
that the commitment of the city does not stop at
    the end of the Week.
  • Cities are willing to invest in the future and in
    a new mobility culture !!!

6212 permanent measures launched in 2007 mainly
in the following categories cycling and
pedestrian facilities, education and
communication about transport policies and
improvements of infrastructure (accessibility).
12
EMW 2007Streets for People
  • Rethink the public space
  • Increasing road space for cars is not the answer
to existing transport challenges. On the
contrary, reducing road capacity for cars can
represent a sustainable, efficient solution and
also allows healthier lifestyles for all citizens
    without reducing individual mobility.
  • Have we got the balance right between competing
    street users?
  • Should our streets and residental suburbs be
designed in order to maximise motor traffic or
should the emphasis be on designing social spaces
where people can meet, shop, take exercise etc ?

13
Traffic tests in Copenhagen
  • Traffic tests
  • Fifteen traffic tests proposed by local groups
and implemented by the city administration
  • The results gathered will allow the city to take
informed decisions on whether or not to implement
the tested measures on a long-term basis.
  • Example A new Strandboulevard
  • Turning roads into recreational areas?
  • Involvement of local residents and shop owners
    in urban planning
