Why Use Graphic Organizers?
  • Rationale The mind sorts data against patterns
By teaching patterns w/in data, students can
find what is important more quickly and
    accurately Payne (1998, p.53).

4
Why Use Graphic Organizers?
  • Using Graphic Organizers also helps teachers use
    chunking strategies to build memory.
  • Students are more likely to maximize making
    connections between concepts.
  • Teachers can work to maximize firsts and lasts
    within lessons.

5
Why Use Graphic Organizers?
  • Our students in summer school (and many during
the school year) come from a demographic that can
clearly benefit from these teaching strategies.
  • Graphic organizers help dependent readers
organize information and see relationships they
might otherwise not see (Beers, 2003, p.194).

6
Why Use Graphic Organizers?
  • Bowman agrees w/ Payne and points out that using
imagery is a powerful learning tool (2005,
    p.239).
  • When you lecture without using any image-making
method, learners are limited to processing the
spoken information in the main language center of
the thinking brain, while the other half sits
pretty much idle (Bowman, 2005, p.239).

7
Why Use Graphic Organizers?
  • But when you include training methods that are
image-rich, you not only make the information
more interesting to the learner, you also make it
    more memorable (Bowman, 2005, p.239).

8
Why Use Graphic Organizers?
  • Some examples of imagery include Storytelling,
    anecdotes, metaphors, analogies, doodles,
    cartoons, photos, symbols, shapes, icons,
    movement, gestures, physical objects, videos,
visual aids, graphic organizers, etc. (Bowman,
    2005, p.239).
