Terror from the
Gaza Strip
Summary of Past Weeks Events

Chain of Events

2 Israeli civilians were killed this past week as
a result of the escalation of terror in the
region. Since the outbreak of terror from the
Gaza Strip, over 250 rockets and mortar shells
have landed in Israeli territory, causing damage
to the Israeli home front and its civilian
population.

• 21/5 Throughout the day, 18 kassam rockets and
  2 mortar shells landed in Israeli communities
  adjacent to the Gaza Strip (Sderot, Maplasim,
  Gevim), one of which hit a synagogue in Sderot.
• 22/5 15 kassam rockets landed in the region
  during the day. Amongst these attacks, a female
  Israeli civilian was killed by a rocket which
  landed on Ben Yehuda Street in Sderot. In another
  incident, a rocket hit a Gas station in Kibbutz
  Gevim causing damage to the station. In addition
  to the death of one civilian, the attacks
  resulted in one moderately injured, 2 lightly
  injured.

Chain of Events

• 23-24/5 These two days, marking the Jewish
  holiday of Shavuot, were endured by a
  percentage of the Israeli population, primarily
  in the city of Sderot. Residential neighborhoods
  were directly hit by kassam rockets, causing
  damage to many houses and vehicles in the area.
  In addition, a factory in the industrial area of
  Sderot was hit, causing damage to the building. A
  total of 20 kassam rockets and 6 mortar shells
  landed in the region throughout the holiday.
• 25-27/5 An Israeli civilian was killed this
  weekend by a kassam rocket which landed next to
  his car while he was driving on the streets of
  Sderot. A total of 33 kassam rockets and 9 mortar
  shells landed in Israeli territory this weekend,
  lightly injuring 4 civilians. The industrial
  center of Sderot was also hit, resulting in no
  injuries although damage was caused to a factory.

IDF Operations

• With intentions of preventing further damage to
  Israels citizens and property, this past week,
  the IDF has carried out operations in response to
  the continuation of terror from the Palestinian
  arena.
• The IAF has continued to strike HAMAS posts in
  both the northern and southern vicinities of the
  Gaza Strip, warehouses and structures used by
  HAMAS and Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) for
  manufacturing and storing of weaponry, and
  against additional terrorist operatives. A total
  of 6 terrorists were killed this past week.
• In addition, an Islamic Jihad weapons
  manufacturing facility in Rafah, in the southern
  Gaza Strip has been targeted along with a
  business involved in transferring funds to terror
  organizations.
• A vehicle in Sajaiya carrying a Hamas terrorist
  cell of the rocket-production division has also
  been attacked. The cell was en route to launch
  rockets to Israel.

Comments

• For more than two weeks terror organizations
  operating within Gaza, mainly HAMAS, have
  continued their campaign of firing rockets into
  Israeli communities as a mean to divert the
  attention away from the internal strife within
  Gaza between HAMAS and FATAH.
• These actions are further proof of the
  callousness that defines the attitude of HAMAS
  towards life - both in Israel and in the PA alike
  - as it attacks both Israeli civilians and PA
  security forces in order to further its cause.

Comments

• The IDF is acting out of the commitment to defend
  the security of all Israels civilians, and will
  continue to operate against terror organizations.
  Nonetheless, Israel is doing its utmost prevent
  the injury of uninvolved individuals, while
  acting in self defense, against terrorists that
  operate and take shelter in densely populated
  areas, using them as human shields.
• The IDF operations aim to prevent further
  planning and carrying out of terror attacks, by
  targeting and destroying the infrastructure of
  terror such as weapons caches and laboratories
  used by the terrorists.
