Title: Seniors in the Waterloo Wellington LHIN

1
Seniors in the Waterloo Wellington LHIN
2
Population Growth
  • By 2016, it is projected that seniors age 65
will comprise 14.4 (116,062) of the population,
a 22 increase over 2007 total LHIN population.
  • The greatest growth will occur in the 65-74 year
age range, followed by the 85, and then the
    75-84 year olds.
  • This will increase the demand for long-term,
    home, and community-based care.

Population projections to 2016

Long Term Care
  • 35 long-term care (LTC) homes provide 3,666 beds
    (including long-stay, short-stay, and
    convalescent care)
  • As of June 2007
  • LTC bed occupancy 99
  • People waited on average 84 days for a bed (the
    provincial average is 62 days)
  • 1,688 residents were on the wait list for a LTC
bed (including those waiting for a transfer)
  • Among LHINs, the WWLHIN has the third highest
number of days its residents have to wait for
    placement in a long-stay bed.

5
Supportive Housing
  • CCAC case managers have identified that a third
of those on LTC wait lists do not require this
level of care and can manage with augmented home
    support.
  • The WWLHIN is one of only 2 LHINs in Ontario that
receives no support from the province for
    supportive housing arrangements for seniors.
  • A recent study by the MOHLTC shows that 85 of
people age 65 want to continue being at home as
    they age.

6
Specialized Geriatric Services
  • Psycho-geriatric and specialized geriatric
services in Waterloo and Wellington are described
    as stretched or at capacity.
  • In Waterloo region there are no psycho-geriatric
beds and clients go to St. Josephs Health Centre
in London or Grand River Hospitals psychiatric
unit at the Kitchener site to access these
    services.

7
Diversion of Services
  • A significant proportion of seniors on the
    long-term
  • care waiting list can be safely and
    cost-effectively
  • diverted to the community if given integrated
  • packages of care (estimated figures)
  • 31 definite
  • 44 coordinated model needed
  • 25 LTC needed
  • CIHR Report Setting the Balance of Care in
    Waterloo Wellington, Ontario
