  • Review / Some thoughts that we can take from our
    last class are
  • the foundational truth and confession that Jesus
is the Christ and Son of God, is the rock upon
which He was to build His church
  • Ps 11822 The stone, which the builders refused,
is the head of the corner.
  • Isa 2816 therefore thus saith the Lord Jehovah,
Behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation a stone, a
tried stone, a precious corner-stone of sure
foundation he that believeth shall not be in
    haste. ).
  • 2) That the church has enemies the gates of
    Hell.
  • 3) He who opposes the doctrine of the atonement
(Peters rebuke of Jesus dying), is an adversary
and offense to Christ (thou art a stumbling-block
unto me) though he be as sincere in his
    profession as Peter himself was.
  • 4) Jesus said to deny ourselves surrender all
of our will to do the will of God.
  • take up our cross - So to carry the cross is a
figurative expression, denoting that we must
endure whatever is burdensome, or is trying, or
is considered disgraceful, in following Christ.
It consists simply in doing our duty.
  • Temporal VS Eternal whoever saves the
temporal, forfeits the eternal Whoever lays down
    the temporal gains the eternal.
  • For what shall a man be profited, if he shall
gain the whole world, and forfeit his life? or
what shall a man give in exchange for his life?
  • 5) A promise with respect to the establishment of
    the Kingdom of Heaven
  • a. that John had preached to prepare and turn
    the hearts of men
  • b. that would be established on the Son of God
who is both Lord and Christ.

announcing the truth of His mission of v21, one
  • of the more remarkable miracles takes place.
  • High Mountain probably Mt Tabor.
  • Luke adds that He went up there to pray.
  • He takes with Him Peter, James, John
  • 15) What was the appearance of Jesus like?
  • His face shone like the sun, and His garments
    became as white as light.
  • THE FULNESS OF THE GODHEAD DWELT IN THE BODY OF
    CHRIST MANIFESTED TO THESE DISCIPLES
  • 16) What would be the meaning and significance of
    Moses appearing?
  • Representative of the Old Law in the person of
    Moses. The Jewish Legislator. The
  • MEDIATOR of the OLD.
  • 17) What would be the meaning and significance of
    Elijah appearing?

Instruction In View of The Rejection
  • Transfiguration on the Mountain Mt 171 13
  • 18) What would be the meaning and significance of
    v 5?
  • "This is My beloved Son, with whom I am
    well-pleased listen to Him!"
  • An end to the Old Law The fulfillment of the
    predictions of all the prophets.

6
Instruction In View of The Rejection
  • Transfiguration on the Mountain Mt 171 13
  • CQ - What were Moses Elijah talking about?
    (Lk931)
  • Were speaking of His departure which He was about
    to accomplish at
  • Jerusalem. (again His mission of 1621)
  • 1Pt110-11As to this salvation, the prophets who
prophesied of the grace that would come to you
made careful searches and inquiries, seeking to
know what person or time the Spirit of Christ
within them was indicating as He predicted the
sufferings of Christ and the glories to follow.
  • Lk 2425-27 "O foolish men and slow of heart to
believe in all that the prophets have spoken!
  • "Was it not necessary for the Christ to suffer
these things and to enter into His glory?"
  • Then beginning with Moses and with all the
prophets, He explained to them the things
concerning Himself in all the Scriptures.

Instruction In View of The Rejection
  • Transfiguration on the Mountain Mt 171 13
  • CONTINUED
  • CQ - Upon seeing Elijah logistically in after
life glorified form what question did they have
    for Jesus?
  • Elijah coming first and preceding the Messiah.
  • CQ - Was their question a legitimate question?
    Malachi 44-6
  • "Remember the law of Moses My servant, even the
statutes and ordinances which I commanded him in
Horeb for all Israel. "Behold, I am going to send
you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the
great and terrible day of the LORD. "He will
restore the hearts of the fathers to their
children and the hearts of the children to their
fathers, so that I will not come and smite the
    land with a curse."

  • Transfiguration on the Mountain Mt 171 13
  • CONTINUED
  • CQ - What did the apostles understand about the
    coming of Elijah?
  • That this prophecy was fulfilled in John the
    Baptist.
  • Peter Wrote the following
  • 2 Pt 116-18 For we did not follow cleverly
devised tales when we made known to you the power
and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we were
    eyewitnesses of His majesty.
  • For when He received honor and glory from God
the Father, such an utterance as this was made to
Him by the Majestic Glory, "This is My beloved
Son with whom I am well-pleased"--
  • and we ourselves heard this utterance made from
heaven when we were with Him on the holy
    mountain.

Instruction In View of The Rejection
  • Instruction About Faith Mt 1714-21

    914-29.
  • The next day, after the transfiguration (Lk
937), there is a large crowd gathered and some
    scribes arguing with them.
  • CQ - Who are the scribes arguing with?
  • The other 9 apostles. Remember Jesus warning in
    1611-2?
  • CQ - What could this questioning be about?
  • His birth, His parents, His home, His
appearance, His manner of life, His
instructions, His power questioned as fraudulent,
insinuating that such a person could not be the
    Messiah.
  • Leaven is often disguised as honest questions,
and the leaven of error is often subtle.

Instruction In View of The Rejection
  • Instruction About Faith Mt 1714-21 CONTINUED
  • When Jesus and the 3 apostles join the other 9
apostles, what frustrating event has the
    multitudes stirred?

    demon
  • 2) How did the multitudes, and the father of the
    son, greet Jesus?
  • LORD
  • 3) Should the apostles have been able to cast out
    this demon? (101,8)
  • yes
  • 4) According to the disciples question in v19,

  • 5) What was the root cause for the apostles
inability to cast out the demon? unbelief, lack
    of faith
  • 6) THOUGHT what can we take away from this
    event?

  • 2nd Prediction Surrounding His Death and
    Resurrection (1st was 1621)

Philipi 1621 (and question 8 of our last
lesson), what additional detail does He add?
  • KJV betrayed - delivered into the hands of
    men.
  • 6) Since the disciples have heard Jesus predict
His resurrection twice, why would they be
    exceeding sorry ?
  • Lk 944-45 "Let these words sink into your ears
for the Son of Man is going to be delivered into
the hands of men." But they did not understand
this statement, and it was concealed from them so
that they would not perceive it and they were
afraid to ask Him about this statement.
  • Also Mk 931-32 (same)
  • Lack of understanding and faith.
  • Thought His death meant the end of His (and
    theirs) hope of a kingdom.
  • Lk248 And they remembered His words,angels
speaking to them at empty tomb
  • Jn 219 "Destroy this temple, and in three days
    I will raise it up."
  • Jn 222 So when He was raised from the dead,

they believed the Scripture and the word which
    Jesus had spoken.

  • Instruction About Temple Tax Mt 1724 27
  • Not a tax for the Romans.
  • Jesus and the apostles arrive at Capernaum. Peter
    is asked about a tax
  • imposed on Jewish males (Ex 3012-13) and if
    Jesus pays this tax. The
  • question appears to be without an evil motive.
  • 8) How does Peter answer this question?
  • Yes, (Jesus pays His taxes)
  • 9) What answer does Peter give to Jesus
    question?
  • From strangers, then the children are exempt
  • 10) What lesson is Jesus teaching when He pays
the tax? (hint 1 Co chpts 8-10 Romans 14)
  • However, so that we do not offend them,
  • Things to consider
  • Jesus is Gods Son and was not obligated to pay
    His Fathers tax.
  • Jesus voluntarily gives up His privilege here and
prepares them for His next lesson humility.
  • Jesus submitted to regulations that did not
violate a Divine principle so as not to offend
    or give cause to stumble.

13

    1724-27. The apostles are
  • thinking about crowns when Jesus has been talking
    with them about crosses
  • (1038 1624). Perhaps they thought Jesus was
    being partial toward James,
  • John, and Peter (171-6).
  • 11) What questions did the apostles ask Jesus?
  • Who then is greatest in the kingdom of heaven?"
  • 12) For an answer to their question about
