3Our Computing Environment
- All educational material is available on-line
through ANGEL (http//angel.psu.edu). All
faculty members provide their lectures as
PowerPoint presentations and notes/handouts as
either PDF or Word files. - All lectures rooms (well, almost all), all
Problem-Based Learning rooms, the student
cubicles, the outdoor courtyard and the Harrell
Library have wireless Internet access. The dorms
(Manor) are wired. - Lecture rooms have 120V power at the seats.
- Everyone has a personal file space (that is
backed up daily) and an account to a centralized
email and calendaring system. - All lecture material and your personal file space
is available from any computer with Internet
access. - Students can bring their own computer (Mac or
PC), or you can purchase a pre-configured Dell
laptop from us through our Student Laptop
Program.
4Laptop Program, Why?
- We want to enhance your educational experience at
the College of Medicine, and allow you to focus
on things that matter. You should not be
distracted with having to manage the service of
your computer. - We can better support computers that we know a
lot about. Let IT manage your computer (patches,
security updates, etc.), so you dont have to.
5Laptop Program, How it works.
- Through bulk purchasing agreements with Dell and
with educational software discounts, we can offer
a purchase plus support plan for a laptop that is
well-suited to your needs for a very competitive
price. - The Dell laptop Model D610 was chosen by the
medical student IT representatives for the 2009
class. This year it may be the Model D620. - The support plan includes remote control
capability and a laptop-swap for hardware
repairs. - All anti-virus, anti-spyware and software updates
are pushed automatically.
