The EIEL Geodatabase (I)

• It has been launched in 1986 by the Spanish
  Ministry of Territorial Administration (now, of
  Public Admins.)
• It has to be formed at provincial level and by
  the provincial councils
• Contains information on
• Demography
• Housing
• Urban Planning Environment Protection
• Facilities
• Streets and Roads
• Health, Social Care, Sports, Educational,
  Cultural and Commercial buildings

The EIEL Geodatabase (II)

• Data refer to Municipality level
• But minimal territorial unit of reference is
  populated area
• All of the data deal with territory gt GIS are
  the tool
• Currently, it has to be updated each five years
• Each updating takes 2 1/2 years
• Last edition (12/31/2000) contains gt 5 Gb of
  data

The Y2K update (I)

• Made by means of an agreement with a Coruña
  University
• Two different areas
• Data capturing developed by experts and
  scolarship holders from Architecture and Civil
  Engeneering faculties
• GIS Applications developing Database Laboratory
  staff and scholarship holders, Faculty of
  Informatics.
• General coordination and monitoring by
  technicians from the Servicio de Asistencia
  Técnica a Municipios (Unit of Technical Advice to
  the Municipalities) from Diputación de A Coruña
  (A Coruña Province Council)

• Targets
• Data updating by taking advantage of GIS
  technologies
• Providing Diputación Provincial with GIS tools to
  manage and publish EIEL and as the nucleus of a
  corporate GIS
• Constrains
• Corporate DBMS under revision
• New EIEL data model (purely alphanumerical)
• Previous editions not fully managed by GIS (only
  choropleth maps)
• Lack and hetereogeneity of base mapping
