ACSMs Health-Related Physical Fitness Assessment
Manual
  • Chapter 6

2
Posture Body Alignment
  • Posture is defined as the position the body or
parts of the body that necessitates a minimum
amount of energy to sustain a mechanically
efficient function of the joints and muscles.
  • Incorrect posture can result in chronic pain and
    potential injury
  • Line of gravity (LOG) goes through the center of
    most joint axies

3
Results of good posture
  • Proper alignment of vertebral column
  • Improved balance
  • Overall balance of the muscles
  • Optimal performance in daily activity

4
Center of gravity
  • COG the point where all forces acting on the
    body are at equilibrium.
  • LOG travels vertically straight through the COG
  • Performing postural assessments requires a
knowledge of the ideal LOG for proper posture

5
Static Versus Dynamic Posture
  • Static posture- not moving (i.e. sitting or
    standing)
  • Dynamic posture- moving body segments (i.e.
    walking or running)
  • Injuries can occur when either form of posture is
improper alingment for a prolonged period of
    time.

6
ROM
  • Defined as the amount of motion that occurs
    around a joint
  • Starts in anatomical position (0?)
  • Active Range of Motion (AROM)
  • Performance without assistance
  • Pain free
  • ROM assessment should be stopped if the client
    experiences any pain or discomfort
  • Joint function and ROM depends the type of joint.

7
Goniometry
  • Goniometry provides
  • ROM data
  • A determination muscular imbalances
  • a ROM baseline
  • Assistance in establishing ROM goals
