- National Board Certification in American

Qualifications
- Hold a baccalaureate degree
- Hold a valid state teaching license
- Have taught in a classroom for three years
- Currently have a classroom assignment
- Administrators, staff development specialists, or
other potential candidates not assigned to the
classroom can borrow a classroom to complete
their portfolio.

13National Board Assessment Process
- Performance-based assessments which measure
teaching practice against high and rigorous
standards - Requires self-reflection and analysis of ones
practice - Assessments Two Major Parts
- 1. The school-site portfolio
- Teachers must show evidence of meeting NBPTS
standards through their - classroom and professional work.
Portfolio submissions include student work - samples, videotapes of
classroom interaction, and written commentaries
that - reflect their actions and
provide a window into the thinking behind their
practice. - 2. The assessment center
- Focus on content knowledge, as well as
age-appropriate and content-appropriate - strategies, teachers use to teach the subject
matter. Teachers demonstrate their - knowledge and strategies with written responses
to prompts or stimulus - materials. Evidence must show
how teachers are meeting NBPTS standards.

- Four-point rubric
- Scorers are all recognized practicing teachers in
the certificate-area - Scoring takes place in the summer
- Bias, validity and reliability checks in place
(has higher reliability rates than AP exam)
19Illinois Scholarship ProcessMarch-October 2004
- Visit the NBPTS web site (www.nbpts.org) and
apply after January 1, 2004. - You will be responsible for the first 300.00 of
the fee. - Follow the directions on the ISBE web site
(www.isbe.net ) to apply online for the Illinois
scholarship for the remaining 2000.00
application fee after March 1, 2004. - Complete the NBPTS application and the ISBE
application. - Wait for notification from ISBE that you have
received the scholarship. - Monitor your application process at the NBRIC web
