11POWERFUL SOLUTIONS
Environmental Stewardship
- Industrys image is changing but still a concern
- We lease U.S. DOE land on the Hanford Site
public perception issue - Energy Northwest has a long history of
carbon-free energy - We want to reduce CO2 emissions and grow
renewable energy portfolio - In 2002, we decided to develop an Environmental
Management System (EMS) and pursue ISO 14001 EMS
certification - Achieved certification in April 2005
- Greg Cullens presentation describes ENs
approach
12POWERFUL SOLUTIONS
What is an EMS?
13POWERFUL SOLUTIONS
WHY?
- No burning platform
- Personal commitment
- Education
- Home
14POWERFUL SOLUTIONS
WHY?
- Put our resources where our mouth is
- Do you want to be a leader?
- Systematic approach and validation by independent
experts - Increase confidence (peace of mind), trust,
recognition, - Increase likelihood of acceptance of expansion,
new ventures - Only 11 of public trusts CEOs, 15 trust
corporations, 21 think corporations care a lot
(2006 Luntz Maslansky) - Protect the environment over the long term its
the right thing to do!
15POWERFUL SOLUTIONS
What has changed as a result of our EMS
- Institutionalized environmental management
- Built it into processes and procedures from
project planning though execution - Increased awareness through communication and
training - Moving from reactive to proactive
16POWERFUL SOLUTIONS
What has changed as a result of our EMS
17POWERFUL SOLUTIONS
Cost/Benefit
- Despite economic environment, we cant afford NOT
to invest in environmental stewardship - Triple Bottom Line People Planet Profit
everyone benefits
Stewardship
18POWERFUL SOLUTIONS
Cost/Benefit
- Recycling more, generating less waste
- Have gained some efficiencies Greg Cullen will
provide details - Will help when recruiting the next generation of
workers being raised to be environmentally
conscious
19POWERFUL SOLUTIONS
Challenges and Lessons Learned
- Changing the culture
- Need to follow through over time all the way to
the finish line and beyond
This experimental car travelled 2,400 miles at
46.2 mph average speed to win the 2005 North
American Solar Challenge. Stefano Paltera photo.
20POWERFUL SOLUTIONS
Challenges and Lessons Learned
- Regulatory citations still need to follow the
rules - No harm done to environment, but had the
potential to impact our reputation (priceless) - Disappointing. Took it very seriously, with
aggressive, appropriate and timely corrective and
preventive actions - Used our existing EMS framework to respond, made
enhancements, e.g., improved training, ownership
of chemicals, self-assessments, added
corporate-level environmental oversight
21POWERFUL SOLUTIONS
Lessons Learned Keys to Success
- Organizational commitment, from top leadership to
middle management to worker level - Provide systems and support to make it work, and
then hold people accountable - Provide adequate resources to do it right
22POWERFUL SOLUTIONS
Looking Forward
- New administration focusing on renewable energy
sources, climate change - Shovel-ready facilities, nuclear and renewable
energy projects are gaining favor
23POWERFUL SOLUTIONS
Looking Forward, contd
- Increased interest in environmental protection by
government AND public - EPA moving towards regulating greenhouse gases
- Public more likely to support reduced government
regulation for renewable energy exploration - 44 want a shift to more environmentally friendly
sources of energy, 25 want greener sources - 74 have most positive opinions of renewable and
environmentally friendly, clean sources
(Source 2006 Luntz Maslansky) - Skeptical about greenwashing must be real
24POWERFUL SOLUTIONS
Take Home Messages
- Its not what you SAY its what you DO
- Its too late when you are standing in front of
the cameras!
25POWERFUL SOLUTIONS
