Title: Version 4
1Version 4
2Agenda
- Marcus Kirby of TfG on pass4press
- Jack Bisset of Polestar on proof4press
- Stuart Spiers of Vio on On-line Flight Checking
3Version 4
4What weve done and why - agenda
- PDF X/1a2001 - the great debate
- Changes to how the file is created
- The reasons behind those changes
- Flightcheck settings - warn, error and pass
- Applications and Operating Systems
- RIP Standardisation Initiative
- The next year - our current thoughts
5PDF/X-1a2001 - To be or not to be compatible
- What is PDF/X-1a?
- Much debate as to whether we should make Version
4 fully compliant - International standard being increasingly adopted
- Compatible with future developments
- Requires Acrobat 6 (recent release) or expensive
alternative solutions - Compromise - Recommend full compliancy but not
fail on that alone
6PDF/X-1a and pass4pressHow they relate to each
other

PDF/X-1a
PDF
pass4press
8pass4press - required conditions for PDF/X-1a to
conform
- Image resolution restrictions need to be added
- Multiple Master fonts not permitted
- No non-CMYK colours
- Maximum ink density not to exceed 300
- Truetype fonts not recommended (warn not fail)
- Same as last year (almost)
9PDF/X-1a2001 - required additions for pass4press
to conform
- GTS-PDFXVersion and Conformance keys
- DeviceN color must be either Grey or CMYK
- Must identify target printing condition or Output
Intent - introducing the very snappy
OF-COM-PO-P1-F60 - LZW compression is not permitted
- The Trapped key must be set - and therefore
should be either True or False
10The other changes
- Some file creation (application) changes and some
PDF distillation changes - Application changes relate to Quark as that is
where the bulk of our experience lies - Greyscale images must not have image box set to
none - Stylized fonts should not be used in Quark
- PDF creation changes
- No JBIG or JPEG2000 compression
- Annotations must not be set to print
- Document must not contain javascript, actions,
embedded postscript fragments or layers
11And the reasons why
- Many are there to ensure that pass4press is
PDF/X-1a compliant - Some are there to remove potential issues that we
have discovered through experience - We believe that these changes provide a gradual
but continual improvement which ensures that the
pass4press standard (in combination with other
initiatives) continues to provide real benefit to
all parties in the workflow
12Flightchecking
- You will hear and see more on the on-line system
in a bit but that is not the only work that has
been carried out - PPA felt that it was important to provide
vendors/manufacturers with a mechanism to help
determine whether their solutions could deliver a
file that met the pass4press standard - Different manufacturers deliver different levels
of solution - Direct from Quark (create postscript, distill and
flightcheck) - From postscript file (distill and flightcheck)
- Simply flightcheck the pdf
13Flightcheck 2
- We have created a series of files (application,
postscript, and pdf) which pass, warn and fail
correctly on all criteria that need to be checked - Provide these files to suppliers who run them
through their solutions and provide the reports
back for the PPA to check - If all is satisfactory the vendor will be
permitted to use the pass4press logo and name
within their product and the pass4press website
will include them in a list of accredited
solutions
14What is checked (1)
- PDF version 1.2 or below will fail and if they
include transfer curves, halftone settings, ICC
profiles, or OPI comments they will fail - Image resolutions below 150dpi fail, between 150
and 300dpi warn, between 300 and 450 pass and
over 450 warn - Separated PDFs (as opposed to composite) and
those with security settings fail - Multiple Master, fonts not embedded or subset -
all fail stylized fonts or Truetype fonts will
warn - If PDF contains RGB, spot or LAB colours it will
fail - If any image has maximum ink density over 300 it
will warn
15What is checked (2)
- If any bitmap has resolution higher than 2400dpi
it will warn - If PDF does not have the PDF/X-1a version and
conformance tags in the header or if it does not
have an Output Intent (printing condition
description) specified it will warn - If DeviceN setting are not set to only grey or
CMYK it will fail - If LZW compression is used or the Trapped key is
not True or False it will fail - If PDF contains javascript, actions, embedded
postscript fragments or layers, and if it
includes annotations or uses JBIG or JPEG2000
compression it will fail
16Applications and Operating Systems
- Quark Xpress, InDesign, Acrobat, Mac OS 9 and X
(and classic within OS X) and PC - Much debate over exactly how to provide
guidelines for how to prepare files correctly
without creating 128 page brochure - We believe we have produced a simple yet
comprehensive guide to cover most scenarios
17RIP Standardisation Initiative
- Different RIPs process files differently
- Needed mechanism for testing RIP settings to
allow vendors to release instructions for how to
set the RIPs up so that they produced consistent
(and expected) results - Borrowed heavily from a number of international
working groups and organisations and created a
test file along with image of how file should
appear - Test file and image available on website with
links to vendors who have produced solutions or
instructions - We strongly suggest that all publishers use the
test file to check their end-to-end workflow
18And now
- Looking to make PDF/X-1a mandatory next year
- Looking to provide further assistance and
instructions on the Pass4Press website - Looking to provide ICC profile(s) for target
colour space(s) - Looking forward to a break!
- Looking forward to Jacks bit about

20- Proof and Print are different !
Proof

21 What are the issues with Proofing ?
- In the analogue world there was limited
- choice and limited variance.
- In the digital world, multiple choice and
- an unlimited ability to vary the result.
- Proofs can be provided to the printer
- which are not reproducible on press, the
- result is disappointment for all concerned.
-
-
22 What is proof4press?
- proof4press is an accreditation process by
- which different proofing systems can be
- aligned to produce a common industry
- proven result.
- proof4press will allow all pages of a
- magazine, be they editorial or advertising to
- be produced to single standard.
-
- proof4press non proprietary, open standard.
-
23 Which Proofing Standard ?
- Debate within pass4press committee.
- Aligned with ISO 12647.
- Industry proven standard.
- Aimed initially at quality coated products.
-
24 How are you accredited ?
- A standard suite of images and
- colorimetric charts are produced.
- There is a process of visual assessment
- and scientific measurement of submitted
- samples.
- The data captured during accreditation is
- used to police the standard.
-
25 How will I know I have a proof4press proof ?
- Proofs will have a control element and the
- proof4press logo.
- There is a verification process.
-
26 How is proof4press policed ?
- proof4press verifier software.
- Read control strips on the proof.
- Software compares against standard,
- pass or fail.
- Pass allows printing of a certificate.
- Certificate attached to proof.
-
27- Where can I get the proof4press verifier
software ?
- proof4press Verifier software
- Available from Laurie Mullany Associates.
- More information at pass4press.com
-
28- Creo.
- Agfa.
- Du Pont.
- KPG.
- Others to follow.
29- Range of proof standards for different
- substrates and print conditions.
- Increase number of systems /vendors
- accredited.
-
-
-
30 What are the benefits ?
- More consistent match on Press.
- Aligns with work many printers are doing
- to with ISO 12647 print standards.
- proof4press will allow more choice in
- proofing solutions that can produce a
- standard result.
- Greater confidence that the proof result
- will translate to ink on paper.
-
31 Proofs you can
