  persons work or ideas without giving that person
  appropriate credit, thereby trying to pass it off
  as your own.

• Cutting and pasting anything from the Internet
  and putting it into your research paper without
  citing the source.
• Taking someone elses words or ideas and changing
  them into your own words without citing the
  source.

• Buying or downloading research papers from the
  Internet.

• Submitting one of your own research papers in
  more than one class.
• This is referred to as self-plagiarism.

• Borrowing a research paper that your friend wrote
  and handing it in with your name on it.
• This is true even if your friend gave you
  permission to do it!

• If you are working on a group assignment, and one
  of the people in your group is found to have
  plagiarized part of the assignment
• EVERYONE in the group will face the same
  consequences.

• Any time you are found to have plagiarized, you
  will have a note placed on your academic
  transcript.

  will receive a grade of zero on your assignment.

• If the plagiarism in your paper is found to be
  extensive, and you are caught doing it more than
  once, you could fail the entire course and be
  suspended from Seneca for a minimum of 3
  semesters.

  may result in you being asked to withdraw from
  Seneca College completely.

• Citing a source means that you give credit to the
  author(s) of the thoughts or ideas you use in
  your research paper.
• This is sometimes also referred to as
• Referencing
• Documenting

• To cite your sources properly, you must follow a
  set of rules called a citation style.

• There are many different citation styles.

Your instructor will tell you which one to use.

  source you use in two places.

1. In the main part of your paper. (This is
called an in-text citation.)
2. In a list at the end of your paper. (This is
called a Works Cited list.)
