10
Some feedback
  • 1973 to 1990 Only youth activities with
    Ballonsportgruppe Stuttgart
  • It took 15 years to develop a respectable program
of youth activities by the ballooning federation
  • How long will it take to convince clubs to set up
attractive conditions, to build a real community,
and not being only a rent-a-balloon-station, to
    foster youngsters integration ?

11
Some feedback
  • Ballooning is not a typical activity for young
    people
  • Only in a few countries we have youth activities,
at the moment in Germany and France
  • But only few clubs and balloonists are engaged in
    capturing youth interest in ballooning

12
Some feedback
  • But the need of a more robust structure appeared
    to be crucial future initiatives
  • Indeed, the main challenge to overcome is the
    cost
  • With the increasing help of sponsors and a
helpful community in adapting the conditions to
youngsters, this can be more affordable and
    valuable in return
  • Youth enthusiasm around ballooning can also be
captured and fostered by gathering different
people from different horizon countries or
    airsports

13
What is their feedback
  • Every young involved enjoyed ballooning
  • They from the different initiatives
  • Had the feeling to be part of the air sport
    community
  • Learnt that teamwork is key to this activity and
    also beyond
  • Understood that self discipline and rigourness
during flight preparation and handling of the
    material really matters
  • Had great fun with their peers and coaches

    airspace
  • The atmosphere had been discovered and studied by
    balloons
  • Balloons are still used to get meteorological
    information
  • Balloons are used for scientific research, for
example balloons are flying around the pole

Nacza Balloon
  • In the desert of Nazca (Peru), humans used the
desert as a painting wall. The figures they
painted can only have a meaning from the air
  • An american thougt they must have had the need to
fly to see what was the results. And he thought
that was only possible with a balloon.

Nazca balloon
  • Jim Woodman built a balloon with materials the
nazca indiens could have used, and he had flown
with this balloon over the desert.
  • Good starting points of discussion in school
  • What proves that they built such an aircraft ?
  • Which theory did they use ? How did they build it
    ?
  • What was their material at disposal at that time
    ?
  • The advantage of this balloon
  • Implies understanding of different techniques in
    physical, geometry,
  • It is very fast to construct,
  • Is ideal for short school projects

28
Wrap up
  • There are a lot of possibillities to use
    ballooning for educational purposes
  • Resource is also a key factor, so we can only
    realize few of our ideas
  • And it seems that there is no (or very very
little) interest of federations in youth
    activities
  • But they are the only future for airsports
