order to have shopping money and gas money. Once
you enter the work force after high school,
college or the military you will have many more
bills to take care of. This web quest is
designed to have you start thinking about your
future and realizing how much it is going to

TASK
  • It is time to start dreaming. Throughout this
quest, you are going to find your dream house,
car and job. Once chosen, you will determine the
amount of your monthly payments. You will also
be responsible for finding the cost of the other

cover all your expenses? You are about to find
out. If not you may want to rethink your future
    lifestyle.

Process Part 1 Finding a job
  • Often a first job determines where you are going
to live. Sometimes it is the other way around.
Either way, you must find a job. If you have not
    already decided your future career,
    www.bls.gov/search/ooh.asp?ctooh may be useful.
The US governmental site has an index of careers
with a detailed description of each. After
finding your dream job, answer the job related
questions on your worksheet. Make sure you
discover how many years of education are required
for this career. Remember that listed salaries do
not yet have taxes taken out. You may assume
that 28 of your salary will be taken out for
    taxes.

Process Part 2Finding a home
  • You are not just finding a house you are finding
a home. Using one of the sites below, find your
dream house. Answer questions about the house on
your worksheet. Print out the brochure of your
house and attach it to your worksheet. Once you
have found your house, use a real estate loan
calculator to determine the monthly mortgage
payment. You may assume that you are paying 7
interest and extending your mortgage over 30
    years.

Part 3 Now its time to drive
  • It is now time to find the car of your dreams.
For many of us, we already have this part picked
out. Now is your chance to see if that dream car
is possible. You may find it easier to go
straight to the auto manufacturers web page.
Many of them have a design tutorial where you can
make a dream car. Below are other sites that may
    be of use.

Part 3 Now its time to drive
  • Find a car loan payment calculator and find your
monthly auto payment. You may assume the
interest rate is 7 and the term for your loan is
36 months. Do not forget to find the percent of
sales tax for the location you chose to settle
in. You will need to add sales tax to the car
    before finding a loan amount.
  • http//thestc.com/ratecalc.stm will help you find
the sales tax for your new car.

Part 4 The other bills
  • This may take more research than the previous
parts. We are going to assume that you are
entering your career debt free, no student loans
or credit card bills. Besides your mortgage and
car payment, you have many other bills. Your car
will require gas and insurance. For your house
you will have a gas bill and an electricity bill.
You will also have water, sewage and garbage
bills. Many of your will have a telephone bill
(or two), cable and internet bills. You must
research the cost of the bills above and others
not given to you. Ask your parents, call local
    companies etc. for help.

The Budget
  • If you already pay for your own auto insurance
use that figure but if not you will need to look
up the average cost of insurance by state.
Remember the listed rate is for a six month
    period. www.iii.org/media/facts/statsbyissue/auto

  • Dont forget you have to eat. Make a menu for a
month and go to the store to determine your
    monthly cost.
  • Research the rest of your budget. What other
items will you spend money on? Will you have

Part 5 Is it enough?
  • Using your worksheet, determine if your job pays
enough money to cover all you expenses. You may
have to make a few hard decisions and decide if
your previous choices are necessary. If you earn
less than is necessary to cover your bills, you
must go back and make chances until you can live
within your means. If you plan to spend time out
with friends, going shopping, going to the movies
or having what you may consider a life, you will
need money left over to spend on these things.

changes that you needed to make. The
