Title: Why Advocacy Matters

1
Why Advocacy Matters
2
Why Does EITC Advocacy Matter?
  • Elected officials represent CONSTITUENTS!
  • They cant represent constituents who dont tell
    them what they want
  • Even if they dont act according to input, they
should know that their contrary actions are
    likely to have backlash
  • Many state benefits, including EITC, are
    connected to federal EITC
  • Federal budget cuts could mean less EITC
  • Federal funding for free tax prep would provide
much needed resources to tax sites
  • Elected officials respond to squeaky wheels

3
Elected Officials Need Input
  • Officials, regardless of ideology, do a
    risk/reward, cost/benefit analysis.
  • Citizen lobbyists are a key factor.
  • If youre not engaged, your official cant
    analyze the issue accurately.
  • If youre not engaged, others could define your
    point of view.

4
Why Are You Important?
  • You are a leader in your community.
  • Your program impacts lives and the community and
    you have policy expertise.
  • Governmental decisions impact your program.
  • So...
  • Its your right.
  • And, an obligation.

5
Advocacy Has Benefits
  • Increased visibility.
  • Increased credibility.
  • Ability to shape external forces.
  • And, the lives you touch.

6
Advocacy is Essential
  • Having a substantial lobbying presence in
Washington, D.C. and on the state level is no
longer a luxury. Its a cost of doing business.
