- You will be responsible for the information
presented with the introduction of film, the
additional film related vocabulary words. Your
demonstration will be loading film into the film
cassette.

4Emulsion
- Is the light sensitive side of the film.
- Gelatin base with silver halide crystals
suspended evenly on a plastic backing - When light hits the crystals they gather and form
clusters which become the dark areas in a
negative or a print - Think about the ants and the sugar
5How can you figure out which side is which in the
dark?
- Curl of the film
- always curls towards the emulsion
- Lick and stick test
- Lick your thumb and forefinger and stick them to
the end of the film - Emulsion is the side that sticks
6The Film Cassette
- There are three parts to the film cassette
- body
- spool
- end caps
7Are U Aware?
- Long End of the Spool on your RIGHT!
- DONT TOUCH YOUR FILM!
- You could scratch it or get bits of dirt or grime
on it that will scratch it. - Double check before you come out of the darkroom
to make sure you are loaded correctly.
8How can you tell if your film is loaded correctly?
- Try the left hand test
- body between the left hand forefinger and thumb
- flat edge facing right and up
- long end of spool at thumb
- film pulls out to right emulsion side down.

15Quiz 2 Loading and Unloading the Camera
- You will be responsible for the information
presented with the loading and unloading the
camera vocabulary words. Your demonstration will
be loading and unloading film into the camera.
The demo must include step by step verbal
instructions.

- Open the camera back using film rewind knob /
back opener - Insert film cassette into film chamber
- Push down rewind knob
- Put film into take-up slot in take-up spool
- Advance film 2 times using film advance lever
- Check cassette/slack
- Take up spool
- Sprocket

- Rewind slack
- Close the camera back
- Advance film 2 times using film advance lever to
clear the exposed film
17Demo Unloading the Camera
- Press the rewind button located on the bottom of
the camera - Must do this or you will ruin the film!
- Rewind the film using the Film Rewind Knob and
Back Opener - Open the camera back using the Film Rewind Knob
and Back Opener
- Check to be sure the film is rewound
- Remove the cassette
- Close the camera back
186. Film Rewind and Back Opener
- Returns the exposed film to the cassette after
exposure. - Pull up to open the camera back.
- Always wind in the direction of the arrow.

197. Film Chamber
- Space for the unexposed film cassette.
- Long end of the spool fits at the bottom of the
space. - Film should be plastic side out, unrolling to the
right.

2020. Film Take-up Spool
- Stores exposed film until it is rewound into the
cassette. - Note - film will advance onto take-up spool
emulsion side out.

- Moves the film through the camera by use of the
sprockets. - Sets the shutter spring mechanism for the next
frame. - Nikon - Adv. Lever must be in ready position to
release shutter.

- The gear teeth fit the holes in the film to pull
it through the camera and to measure the frames.

- Indicates number of exposures already taken.
- Some automatic cameras count down instead of up.

- Releases the shutter curtains to expose the film
and take the photograph.

30Quiz 3 Taking a Picture or..Making A Photograph
- You will be responsible for the information
presented with the vocabulary words which relate
to taking a photograph. Your demonstration will
be taking a photograph. The demo must include
step by step verbal instructions.

- Selects the LENGTH OF TIME the shutter curtains
are open to expose film in fractions of seconds. - Example - 60 is 1/60th of a second.

348. Shutter Curtain
- Opens and closes to expose your film for the
LENGTH OF TIME determined by the shutter speed

- Scale gives the depth-of-field in relationship to

- Changes the size of the iris opening in the lens
