2What is UGFA?
- The UGFA is an association of University of
Guelph faculty and librarians. - We represent the interests of faculty and
librarians in dealings with the university
administration.
3Special Plan Agreement
- UGFA negotiates the terms of the Special Plan
Agreement which forms the basis for the terms and
conditions of employment for faculty and
librarians at the University.
4UGFA Mandate
- To promote the interests of the faculty and
librarians employed at the university, - including the regulation of labour relations
between faculty and librarians at the university.
The university administration recognizes these
activities of UGFA on behalf of faculty and
librarians.
5UGFA Council and Executive
- The UGFA Council is elected from the membership,
to represent the various Colleges and the
Library. - UGFA Council meets monthly
- during the academic year.
- The UGFA Executive includes the officers,
committee chairs, and members-at-large designated
by Council.

7 Salary Grid
- UGFA has worked tirelessly with the University
Administration in negotiating our salary grid. -
Copies of the grid can be obtained from the UGFA
office (ext. 52126) or under the salary Button
on our website.
8TAPSITenure and Promotion and Selective Increase
- Faculty activities are assessed within the
categories of teaching, research and scholarship,
and service. - Specific information considered relevant in the
consideration of tenure or promotion or selective
increase is decided by members of each Department
and presented in an approved departmental
document.
9Promotion Tenure cont.
- Consideration will be given to the individual
faculty member's contribution in the following
areas - (i) teaching at all levels, including advising of
undergraduate and graduate students and
supervision of their research projects - (ii) research, scholarly, and other creative
activities - (iii) service to the University and society
10Academic Freedom
- Academic freedom is the freedom to examine,
question, teach, and learn, and it involves the
right to investigate, speculate, and comment
without deference to prescribed doctrine, as well
as the right to criticize the University and
society at large.
11Academic Freedom (continued)
- Academic freedom includes freedom in pursuing
research and scholarship and in publishing or
making public the results. - Academic freedom also includes freedom from
institutional censorship.
The Faculty Association is committed to the
pursuit of truth, the advancement of learning,
and the interpretation and the dissemination of
knowledge. Preservation of academic freedom is
one of UGFAs most important goals.
12Contractually Limited Faculty
- Contractually-limited faculty are members of
UGFA, and we continue to strive for equality for
CLs in rights and benefits. - With encouragement from UGFA, the University has
made substantial progress in recent years on how
CLs are treated and valued. - We encourage you to contact us
- with any questions or concerns.
13Grievance Information Officer
- The UGFA Grievance Information Officer deals
with a myriad of issues that concern terms and
conditions of employment for all faculty and
librarians

UGFA is a member of the federal and provincial
organizations of faculty associations/unions

15CAUT/OCUFA
- CAUT and OCUFA play vital roles in keeping us
informed about issues which affect faculty and
librarians. - They lobby the Provincial and Federal
Governments for faculty and librarians. - As a member of UGFA, you are automatically
enrolled as a member of CAUT and OCUFA.
16Reception for New Faculty and Librarians
- Every year, UGFA hosts a wine cheese reception
for new faculty and librarians. - At this event, we also present the UGFA
Teaching/Academic Librarianship awards. - This year, you are invited to be present on
Thursday October 25, 2007 at 400 p.m. in the
University Club.
