THE NATIONAL ASSESSMENT UNIT

• The National Assessment Unit has been established
  to
• develop, deliver and maintain the necessary
  evaluation and
• review, validation and quality assurance
  processes for
• assessment of National Firefighter Selection
• implementation across the Fire and Rescue
  Service.

WHY WAS THE NFS PROCESS DEVELOPED?

• Concerns about inconsistent selection procedures
• In January 2002 Water for Fish and Optimal
  Performance Limited commissioned to develop a
  valid, consistent and legally defensible
  Firefighter selection process.

DEVELOPMENT OF THE JOB RELATED TESTS

• Both fitness tests and job simulations were
  considered
• Content valid approach preferred.
• The views of serving firefighters, expert panels
  and all of the stakeholders represented on the
  project Steering Group were taken into account in
  the design and development of the test battery.
• Job performance criterion tests, on which the
  selection tests and their standards are based
  developed and endorsed

THE NFS PHYSICAL TESTS

• LADDER CLIMB - This test is designed to assess
  confidence at heights
• CASUALTY EVACUATION - This is a test designed to
  assess upper and lower body strength and
  co-ordination
• LADDER LIFT - This is a test designed to assess
  upper and lower body strength and co-ordination
• ENCLOSED SPACE - This is a test designed to
  assess confidence, agility and identification of
  claustrophobic tendencies
• EQUIPMENT ASSEMBLY - This is a test designed to
  assess manual dexterity
• EQUIPMENT CARRY - This is a test designed to
  assess aerobic fitness, stamina, upper and lower
  body strength and co-ordination
