3WHY WE ARE HERE
- Army Child Youth Services concern about fitness
and nutritional status of youth - UMD/4-H expertise in youth development, nutrition
and fitness
4Health Status of Youth
- 67 of the population is overweight
- 9,000,000 youth overweight (15)
- Increased risk among youth for insulin
resistance, hypertension, joint pain, early
puberty, depression, anxiety, weight cycling - 20 of youth calories come from snacks with more
fat and less calcium than ever before
5Declining Level of Fitness
- Youth are increasingly sedentary
- Many activities screen driven requiring little
physical activity - Required PE classes in schools continue to
decline - Youth who do not define themselves as athletes do
not understand the importance of fitness
