Title: Sustainable Priorities: Gold Standard CDM Project
1Sustainable Priorities Gold Standard CDM Project
Topic 1st Gold Standard Project from India
Harsh RavalApril 29, 2009
2Limitations of using Fossil Fuels..
- Producing 1 Unit of electricity, we release _at_
0.8 kg of CO2.
- India produces about 500 billion units of
electricity.
- India accounts for 3.5 of greenhouse emission.
- At 5 growth rate, our coal reserves can not last
for more than 86 years.
- Resources are limited and may not be able to meet
the increase in demand.
- Side Effects of Fossil Fuels
- Ozone hole depletion global warming.
- Melting glaciers and rising sea levels.
- Acid rain, contamination of land water.
3Need For Energy IndependenceFor India
- Extreme dependence on Hydrocarbons (96.26) as
primary source of Indias energy supply.
- Coal (51) Oil (36.39) natural gas (8.84).
- More than 70 of Indias crude oil is imported,
this costs about 45 of the countrys total
import bill.
- Imports are from politically sensitive regions.
- One dollar rise per barrel put a net burden of
Rs.2700 crores.
- Coal is considered abundantly available as it is
believed that the coal stock in world will last
for 117 years by considering 3 growth rate in
production. But the Coal is major culprit for GHG
Emissions and one of the major reason for Global
Warming.
4- So What to do..???
- Only way out is to promote Sustainable
Development by,
- Reduce dependence on fossil fuel
- Promote Energy Efficiency
- Divert towards Renewable Energy.

degrees super heated steam at 100 bar pressure.
- Set up Solar steam generation units, which are
successfully being utilized for power generation
and process utilization for range of Industries
like fertilizers, Chemicals, Textiles, Food
Processing etc
8Solar Thermal Technology

- Solar Hot Water
- Waste Water Evaporation Systems
- Solar Desalination Systems
- Solar Drying Systems etc
9Indias first Gold Standard Solar CDM Project
- Title Solar Steam for Cooking and other
Application
- Ref No 0414, Registered in 2006
- In collaboration with German Government
- Financial Assistance and Guidance from GTZ
- Technological Transfer from Germany
10Project Activity
- Project activity Includes implementation and
operation of Solar Community Kitchens and various
Solar Steam Application across the various
regions in India - The Project activity is bundled activity of 18
installations across the 6 states in India
- Project replaces diesel and wood widely used for
community cooking systems
- The installation covers NGOs, Schools, Temples,
Colleges, Industries etc
- Systems prepare Food and Warm drinks for total
more than 28,000 people everyday
- Methodology used AMS I C Renewable Energy
Projects Thermal Energy for user Version 07
11Sustainable Development
- Multiple direct contribution towards Sustainable
Development
- Reduction of Air pollution
- The Solar Technology substitutes the combustion
of diesel, so directly reducing GHG emission
ZERO EMISSION TECHNOLOGY
- Job creation
- Technology is entirely manufactured in India
using a labour intensive process
- Introduced in India by German-Indian Technical
cooperation so, is result of technical transfer
process
- Operation and Maintenance of Solar systems are
more labour intensive as compared to baseline, so
generates local jobs mainly in rural area
- Improvement of working condition- Specifically
for women in rural areas
- Saves Deforestation in rural areas
12List of bundled Installations
13- Who is the Gold Standard Foundation?
- An independent foundation endorsed by 43 NGOs
- A method for creating premium quality carbon
credits
- Why the Gold Standard Label?
- Provides a quality assurance label for projects
and credits
- Ensures a contribution to Sustainable Development
and Climate Protection
- How?
- GS methodology ensures best practices are
followed
- Screens provide a step-by-step guide to
developing credible projects
14- The Gold Standard methodology was created to
encourage the shift from a fossil fuel based
economy to a renewable energy economy.
- Other projects, such as gas flaring or carbon
capture, may indeed be beneficial to the
environment in the short term, but they dont
change our fundamental relationship to fossil
fuel consumption in the long term. - Gold Standard
- Added sustainable development benefits
- Ensured Environmental Integrity
- Adhere to best practice methodology
- They employ only Renewable Energy Energy
Efficiency technology
- Actively seeks local participation on project
design
- Result in demonstrable sustainable development
benefits
- In the voluntary carbon market, where public
relations and Corporate Social Responsibility
concerns drive investments, choosing the Gold
Standard is good business.
15Gold Standard Benefits
- Controlling risk by Quality assurance
- Enhancing reputation
- Premium prices
- Market visibility
- Low-added cost
- Contribute to sustainable development
- Stakeholder acceptance
- Exceeds the current regulatory standards
16Gold Standard Project Criteria
- Eligibility of the project for GS
- Mostly Renewable energy Energy Efficiency
Projects are considered
17Gold Standard Project Criteria
- Technological Screening
- Details of technology is to be scrutinized,
Technology transfer will add a value to project
- Sustainable Development Screening
- Provide a self evaluation of the projects impact
on
- Local/regional/global environment
- Social sustainability and development

- consult with stakeholders
18Gold Standard Project Criteria
- Additionality Screening
- Previously announced projects screening
- Additionality Tool- Same as UNFCCC
- ODA (Official Development Assistance)
additionality test
- ODA should be used to fund the project or buy the
CERs
- Use of conservativeness
- All the estimates and parameters used in PDD
should comply with conservativeness criteria
19Gold Standard Project Criteria

Parameters
- The PDD must show all the relevant parameters to
be monitored to confirm SD.
- The monitoring process must be clearly explained
in PDD other documents
- Environmental Impacts
- Environmental Impact Assessment must be done for
project if required
- Stakeholder consultation requirements
- Two rigorous Stakeholders meetings required
- Initial meeting Comments and concerns are
collected
- Project proponent reverts back to stakeholders
with explanation about the comments
- Second Main Stakeholders meeting would be held to
discuss the comments received
- Stakeholders report must be submitted to Gold
Standard Secretariat soon after the consultation
and published on website
